UFO LED in a PC Case

has anyone ever done this or attempted to do it? i was planning on having two large PC cases. One for veg, and the other for flower. The case for flowering would contain the LED UFO.

i did some searching and couldnt find anything, so if no one has done it or even tried, ill definitely go ahead and be the first to try it out

the cases i bought are about 11 inches wide on the inside and the UFO's im looking at are about 10 - 10.5 inches so it made me start thinking

i just saw a grow journal on grasscity (found on google) where the guy had the 12x12 LED boxes on both sides on the case and had no lights on top. The grow journal stopped mid way through because he had all male plants, but it was starting to look pretty good. Even WITH his off brand ebay/chinese 14 watt panels he had.

Maybe man. Your right. The 90w UFO is 10.75inches so it would fit but remember it needs 10 to 16 inches from the roof just so the UFO fans have room to get air. And all the air blows out the sides as well so all the worm air that blows out of the UFO will just sit in there and bake the light and decreas the life of the light. I would advise cfl or a 50w UFO. I haveto 90w UFOs and it works good.

alright, good point. so your just using the UFO's as stand alone? with no other type of lighting? are they the tri-spectrum?

i guess i just kind of want to move on from CFL's and try something different, but still be in a PC case

Yeah I use 2 90w UFO and 2 2ft t5 lighting on he sides of the tent. My tent is 2 feet wide 2 feet deep 5 feet tall. My two UFOs fit snug but not to snug and the t5 lighting is in the 2 back corners just to blend spectrum. I would use a 50w UFO and and 2 1 foot t5 or maybe t8. Idk just a cool idea maybe. The t5 and stuff is cool on the sides or corners cuz the leaves and touch and there is no burn and very low heat. Let me know what you decide.
Ps I have had pretty good results with cfl in a pc box.

so what kind of distance from the plant is recommended for the UFO? ive been hearing mixed things on about how distance form the plant isnt as important with led's but that really doesnt make much sense to me. i guess if that true, i can make some sort of a "cool tube" around and through the top of the UFO that can blow the hot air straight out the case that the fans blow out of the top.

also, where's a good place to buy the 1 foot t5's?

thanks for all your help. once i get all these final questions answered ill get the boxes put together and start a grow journal

What about putting holes in the case where the fan is so it asks like a cooling fan should and blows the heated air out of the case? And a small pc fan in the back of case blowing in... done with venting.

yeah, thats what i was thinking. basically enclose the entire part above the bottom of the UFO (except the lights themselves to not lose any strength from the light) and run a fan through it and have it blow the air out holes on the other side

Yeah I would say the lowest I put my UFO is 7 inches and the farthest for best results about almost 2 feet. You can of course cover a larger are then that but it's slower growth but it's still fast. Just I try to makenit a little faster. Lol

i heard you aren't supposed to put your LED closer then 12inches. That it doesn't work better closer, just because its cooler. can't cite it now, but i'll find the information again.


Talk about getting a sick LED, I want to make a 40w version of this thing. It would pretty much be a DIY kessil.

All great info! So I'd definitely be alright with a non movable UFO at the top of my case because by the time they go into the case with the UFO to flower, they will already be through about 3-4 weeks of veg and LST.

I still can't seem to find anything a far as 12-18" T5's. The smallest I've been able to find is 2 foot. And that's about 2 inches too tall for my case :(

Dam well let's see. I guess you could look for 1 foot t12 or t8 lights. Sometimes there labeled as under cabnit lights or shelf lights. Idk look it up give it a try. And just from experience I think the UFO works better for me in flower around 7 to 14 inches away from the tops. Also another problem with LEDs or anylight in fact being to close can "bleach" your meds. The flower really turns pure white. Looks cool but not a good thing. Let me know what you decide to do with your box.
You could always to a simple cfl setting for veg box and try to hook up a led box for flower. That's what I do at least.
X6 23w (100w)cfl for veg then 2x 90w UFO led and two 2foot t12 "grow light" on the sides for flower in a growlab gl60 tent.

Wow, so too close causes an albino effect? 2-3 inches would be too close?

Alright, I'll probably do somethin like that then. I remember Walmart having a "grow light" in their section with all the under cabinet lights and things. I think it's about 18". So I'll go there and check those out a little more. I bought one about 4 years ago and remember it being a deep blue/purple color so hopefully it'll work out. I'll see if there's any info about it on the package or online though.

I guess now is the time I start constructing the grow boxes. If you guys have any more suggestions for me in the next few weeks while I'm ordering my stuff, feel free to give me any input!

I just picked some of those grow lights from wallmart. Have not gotten a chance to use them yet. I herd good reviews about them though. Only 10 bucks a peice..
