Ultra casual outdoor grow tips?

My mom, sister, and I are thinking out picking up a couple clones locally and trying out hand at raising a plant or 2. Basically we are looking to increase our knowledge and maybe try for a more serious grow if we find that we have aptitude and/or get great enjoyment from it. So we aren't looking to win any contests or get rich or anything. We live in the central valley in California and have very little experience with gardening and whatnot.
We also aren't looking to invest a bunch of money into equipment and stuff like that. So basically what I'm here to get is opinions on
  1. Is this even possible? Or is the process just too precise to be taken casually or cheaply?
  2. What are some great resources for getting started with outdoor growing? (most of what I can find is indoor stuff)
  3. Any strains that are particularly forgiving or resilient? I've been told blue dream is a great starter.

Welcome to RIU
1- yes cheaply, casually is kinda vague, they need regular care, inspection etc.
2-id recommend researching typical gardening info to avoid alot of confusion/bro science and don’t get caught up in the mindset that mj is something completely different and magical that needs specialized cannabis nutes etc
3- there should be tons of options for your location.
Your at ground zero in the canna and gardening world so resources should be plentiful

Indoor and outdoor is the same, just less control over the enviorment.
What you need is a big pot with dirt.and at later stage some nute for veg if your dirt gets depleated.any bottle for green non flowering plants will do.later for flower you can buy something for flowering plants.try to aim for flowers that love the same acidity as cannabis or buy cannabis specific nutes.

Thats all you need.it would be great to study about trening tehniques and read a few diaries here onthe forum see how a finished flowering plant looks like.

Allsoo you can start youroen diary and ask foe help usually people are bored and want to help out

As for the strain i would go with some indika they usually eat less and grow up faster.or you could do a autoflower strain soo you dont have the long veg the outdoor brings.but some fast strains 2-3 months start to finish

The reson you see so much about indoor growing is because you have to play God to the plants. They depend on you for everything. Almost the same in a pot outside.

Outside pots are better than inside imo. They require a lot of care and expensive nutes.

I grow outside in the ground. I do a one time prep on the hole. I dig a hole 4 feet dia and 18 inchs deep, mix compost and manure, and that's the cost of planting. You still have to battle with bugs and weather.

Growing in the ground, imo, is much easier and cheaper than in a pot. Besides, we talk in pounds of harvast, not onces.

Well, you are already over spending buying clones when someone probably would have given you seeds. Grow outside as sunlight costs nothing and you live in a legal state. Weeds grow pretty well outside; I have had about 15 'volunteers' this fall and winter. My damn dog keeps eating them.
If you have hard water (over 7 ph) you can lower it by using white vinegar (1 tbsp) to a gallon. It will reduce the ph to 6.3-5. There are more 'strains' then anyone will ever get through. But your friends may suggest one.
Most of all have fun with it.
