US hydro wholesale companies invading Canada

Well seems we are having a battle of the wholesale giants with Sunlight Supply and Hydrofarm. Sunlight Supply set up shop some mnths ago in Surrey and now I hear Hydrofarm bought out a wholesale part of another Canadian food manufacturer.

Not sure what to think about this as from what I heard through the grape vine Sunlight has already used their size and caused the price of Gavita to go up some moths ago ($60). Apparently they were paying in US funds for Gavita so with the exchange rate their cost was much higher than the only Canadian distributor so there some buddy buddy thing between Gavita/Sunlight and Gavita raised the Canadian whole price. The price now has dropped back from the Canadian wholesale lobbying Gavita but still lost a couple orders I had from having to tell guys the ballast they bought a few days ago are now $60 more expensive for the new ones they ordered.

Then I hear some stores where selling GH 3 part sets cheaper/same price as the main local wholesalers and apparently GH didn't want to do anything about it. So I guess Sunlight like to have it both ways.

Whether this is good for prices here I don't know, it is a bit faster to get Hydrofarm stuff here now as some of the wholesalers that were bringing in Sunlight stuff have now dropped them and they're all supporting Hydrofarm. I'm all for cheaper prices but not when there's collusion from certain wholesale companies and manufacturers that hurts one that have been here for 20+ years.

Good to know thanks for the post. I'm not a fan of US companies dominating the Canadian market. We should be innovating and creating exports. If you lose the trade war you start to lose your country, like what happened to Vancouver and the orchards and vinyards of BC.

On one hand business is business and I try to do what I can do take customers from others but usually from stores where for some reason they had personal issues with me. Any store that I'm good with I never try take their customers away, I have other stores send people to me when they are short on something or I send my customers to those stores. No we have foreign companies trying to throw their weight around with legalization coming when before they had no desire to be here at all and they're using the manufacturers to look the other way when it suit them and use the manufacturers to force price changes on others when they can't compete.

Well Hydro farm in on a tear, seem they have it in for Sunlight. They just bought out a huge garden/hydro wholesaler and are merging GreenStar Wholesale with the new one and closing the GreenStart warehouse and the Green Star employees will be merged with the new wholesaler. Also been told Hydrofarm is 80% Canadian owned.

What do you think is going to happen to all you smaller hydro shop owners when HellMart rolls out their lines of el-cheapo hydro supplies and equipment. Gonzo like the thousands of other small, caring local businesses because the unwashed and mostly obese, masses will flock to the store were they can save money to live better. They can kiss my skinny white ass!

What are you selling Gavita for anyway. Sold out to Scott's so you should be boycotting them like I do. Hortilux for the win! :)

I doubt the big box stores will be selling stuff for the price in hydro stores. Go to Home Depot or Rona and GH is full MSRP.
