Variety Grow - Perpetual, "Mini" ScrOG's, DWC in a Cabinet (First Timer)

Welcome Aboard!

I think I'm getting close to grow time! I decided to split my journal out a bit and created https://www.rollitup.org/grow-room-design-setup/310497-new-cabinet-grow-9x4x18-complete.html in the Grow Room Design room. This journal will focus mainly on the actual DWC grow.

Having you guys stop by and check my grow out (even just upping the views without reply) keeps me motivated. And hopefully you really smart guys will stop me before I do anything really stupid (unless I'm just experimenting). Okay let's talk about the grow (and whatever else you want...this is a chill place so hijack away...just play nice). bongsmilie

We're going perpetual! Why?

  1. Here's my menu http://1loveclones.com/2.html. Don't they just look yummy? I think I'm gonna have to grow Flo

just so I can see this flower up close! I want to have around 6 Mother plants each of a different strain.
  2. Every two weeks I can pick which variety clones I want to cycle through.
  3. Since I need to reduce stress in my life this needs to be an enjoyable endeavor for me. Too many grows I've read where people are stressing whether their one poor plant will make it the 10-12 weeks only to have it crash and burn for just the craziest unforeseen thing. I don't want to worry if I lose a plant along the way. Another one should follow two weeks later and I'll always have a bunch of clones ready to go.
  4. I can practice through each cycle until I get good at it including nutes, lighting, etc. Clone to mother, mother to clone. No need to rush to flower if I keep killing mothers and clones. However I do hope that I get it right the first time.
My motto for this grow? Plan to succeed, expect to fail (miserably), and anything beyond failure will be success.

So to finish my opening post I have a question for all of you:

What would be the 6 strains you would have in your stable of Mothers off this menu http://1loveclones.com/2.html?
:peace::blsmoke:

If anybody has done something similar to what I'm calling a "Mini" ScrOG or ScrOG'ette show me the way. I just haven't seen anything like this so any comments you have will be appreciated.

Design considerations:

  1. Allow the entire "unit" (reservoir, lid, plant and screen) to be moved for cabinet maintenance/upgrade as well as maintaining the screen (trim, tie, etc.) from any angle/direction.
  2. I can move/rotate/raise/lower "units" independently to provide for even light distribution.
  3. One "unit" represents a 2 week grow phase where nutrients can be adjusted based on which phase of growth they are in...including the final flush.
  4. Losing one unit (disease, leaks, whatever) does not represent a total loss catastrophe.
So wadda ya think? The one on the right was what I was considering from a height standpoint but I'm gonna go with the one on the left.

Right now the plan is to have one "unit" in veg and 4 units in various stages of flower (1-2, 3-4, 5-6, 7-8) or total 5 "units".

Materials:

  • Sterilite 16qt container
  • 1/2" pvc pipe, end caps, T's and elbows
  • Stainless steel bolt/nut/washer
  • Stucco screen with 2" squares
  • zip ties
Using pvc pipe cutters build up the frame. Take four end caps and drill a hole in the center. Measure and drill 4 holes in the tub lid where the legs will stand. Using the Stainless steel hardware attach the pvc end caps to the topside of the lid. Leave enough play with the bolt so you can slide the four legs of the frame into the four end caps. Cut out the size screen you need and attach using tip ties.

When I cut the first screen something inside my head was telling me not to cut the ends off. I'm not sure why yet but my intuition just said "leave them on for now and if you don't need them take them off." So to don't keep stabbing myself, I bent them 90* downward and then covered them with aluminum tape. What I did notice was that it stiffened up the screen a bit.

Now to make this into a "dark" box.

Here is the beginnings of the Mother's reservoir. Hope to have 6 different strain mothers always going. 1/2" pvc pipe frame is there to support mother's. The end caps are attached just like the ScrOG's.

If you haven't stopped by https://www.rollitup.org/grow-room-design-setup/310497-new-cabinet-grow-9x4x18-complete.html then here's a pic of what we'll be growing in:

The bottom chamber is planned for mothers, vegetating and possibly clones if there is space. the top two chambers will be for flowering. 250MH and two 430HPS all three hopefully in a closed loop cool tubes.

I'm still working out how I want ventilation to work and have a few trick ideas to try out this weekend.

Electrical will be covered by 3 different circuits total 50amps. Not so much for power but redundancy. Power is being brought directly into the cabinet and each chamber will have a plug for all 3 circuits.

Took a trip to Harbor Freight. Nothing you see below was over $9.99. :-) The Electronic Bug Zapper was only $2.99. I had to get this for my wife since she spends hours running around the house with a fly swatter. The Thermometer/Hygrometer was also $9.99. After looking at other places this was a good deal! Keeps min/max too.

Now to Wally World and PetCo to pick up some trial pieces. The far left tub is just too tall and as you saw before the little 6liter tubs were going to be too small. I'm looking at them for cloning...waste not want not :)

Took a few things out of boxes...wtf...a pink fan? hmmm Hey I got it! It is a girls room after all!

OK so the 30-60gal air pump isn't going to handle the load. As it turned out, my fish tank airpump was on it's last legs so I used this airpump and a 3" stone there. I'll be ordering a GH air-pump online.

Thanks Beast! It's one of those "Necessity is the Mother of Invention" things. I'm a creative person at heart and doing something new and realistic only makes this project more enjoyable for me...you could say it is a part of my healing process.

I had outpatient foot surgery yesterday so I have the day off today to recuperate. Tomorrow I'm having a tooth pulled so I'll have another day of recuperation and then next Monday to do the other foot and more recuperation. :) I need to run some errands today including a run to my dispensary for a good Indica for tomorrow (screw Vicodin)! I'll pick up some more parts today as well as exchange the 250wMH Sylvania bulb from Lowe's. It has a rattle to it and I noticed that the ceramic at the tip of the base has been crushed leaving a hole.

My nutes arrived a few days ago as well as my Ph/TDS/EC meter (unfortunately it didn't come with calibration gel so gotta go get that too). The big package arrives today (barring a flat tire on the FedEx truck). Plus I have purchased a bunch of odds and ends for the cabinet. I've got doors on my cabinet (check out that build in my other journal). As soon as the FedEx package arrives I'll shoot all sorts of pics to catch you up. I'm also putting finishing touches on my ventilation design and will post that up in the cabinet journal as well. Grow time is fast approaching!!

Most updates are happening over on the cabinet build https://www.rollitup.org/grow-room-design-setup/310497-new-cabinet-grow-9x4x18-complete.html so make sure you catch up over there.

The tooth extraction went well, foot is healing up just fine (after sleeping all day with the help of a nice White Widow bud). So starting around 4:00 I started designing and building the light fixture and it is now hung! :D

On the grow side I've purchased the following items obtained from different online stores as well as my local hydro shop:

  • HD 3" Netpots and neoprene tops
  • 2" Netpots
  • TechnaFlora Recipe for Success formula kit
  • 1 gal PH Down
  • Dual-Diaphragm air pump
  • 250w MH bulb
  • 250w MH ballast kit
  • 50'x4' 2 mil Mylar
  • Hanna PH/TDS/EC meter
The Mom reservoir has been taped up with one layer of regular duct tape and then another layer of reflective duck tape. The lid will be done as soon as I cut the holes for the net pots.

Hey isn't anybody interested in picking their top 6-8 strains they would like to stable in their Mother pool? My menu is http://1loveclones.com/2.html so check it out and let me know what you think! Thanks hanging out!

My top 3 to try off of that list would be Green Crack, Grape Crush, and and Black Domina. They are all weel known good genetics. I have no dispensarys near me, so the first 2 I'd really like to try. Just ordered a bunch of new strains myself. Cant wait to try them out. hers a couple of them

nice jsgam everything is coming together for you real nice .i like the idea.. small tubs for me are the best to work with .but everyone situation is different .it just my preference dont be uprised when your tub fills up full of nice healthy roots .the technaflora nute line rocks. i have had great results with it .i just some dyna grow in 7-9-5 and bloom 3-12-6 its even better priced than the technaflora btw scribed

This isnt specific to this post, but how do i create a new thread? I'm probably missing something really obvious, but i want to create a new thread to show some of the work i've been doing with my first timers.

I finally have something to report on for the grow portion of this project. If you are only subscribed to this thread, head over to to my New Cabinet - 9'x4'x18" - Complete Build Journal - Lot's of Pics since most of the work is happening there...except for today. :)

I'll be out of town for a few days, but when I get back into town, I'll be heading down to get my clones. Unfortunately the dispensary I gave in my opening post won't have clones in stock until 4/5, so I'm looking around for others who have stock. Things left to do:

  • Finalize ventilation, need a store run for parts
  • Pull electricity into the cabinet
  • Install cabinet door latches
  • Set up pumps, hoses and stones
  • Build something to keep roots apart
  • Prep water, more on this in a bit
I had minor foot surgery yesterday so I'm convalescing with my foot up watching Law and Order reruns. Since I'm getting close to bringing home some new girls, I decided to tape up the lid of the reservoir for my new mothers to pass the time. I think PVC is grown up for Lincoln Logs. :) Since nothing is cemented I can mold this anyway I want. I'll start by chopping down the legs a bit until the girls get bigger.

Yo as far as strains I'd go with the Durban Poison, it's bomb and going in MY next grow for sure! If you go Trainwreck make sure you've got plenty of room as they grow like yetis. Mine is stretchy and crazy and I'm gonna throw you a link to a DWC grow that's got a TW forest going. Maybe that'd work well for your mini SCROG? I have no idea

I'd snag some of that aluminum tape and tape the top of your res too. The reflective tape will absorb less heat than the black will.

Here's that link

da da da da da da buh buh buh buh da da da da de.....(cheesy dating game theme).... :)

I decided to stay with my two favorite dispensaries close by. Let's start with the group shot before introductions.

First we have Kandy Kush. Looking up the dress we see she has a nice set of roots!

Next up with have Larry OG. Not sure if I like looking up her(?) skirt but she got some great roots too!

Next we have <??>Skunk<??>. I lost the label so I need to call and find out exactly which strain it is. I'm going to name her "Flower". :) She only has a little root nub showing but that's good for me!

Next up we have Purple Extreme and DJ's Blueberry each with nice root systems. I'm not sure what to call them yet but ideas are welcome!

I'm putting some finishing touches on the cabinet (check that progress from the link in my sig) and I'll have lot's of pics up either tonight or tomorrow.

peace
