Venting Issues

Needing a little expert help.

Need to know if I can connect the venting from the grow room through the furnace line. I am hoping to T-joint to the existing elbow connection from the furnace to the main line up to the roof. I also need some suggestions on how to eliminate the odor from following the main pipe down to the neighbor. All this must be temporary with modest clean up, so no holes in walls. Any help would be appreciated.

Some specs:

I am using a room 8 ft high 5 ft long and 2 ft deep to grow

The furnace duct is 23 inches form the grow room. The room is to the left of the picture.

I am using a 120cfm bathroom fan.

Only planning on a max of three plants.

The lighting is a T5 3 ft with five 39-watt tubes. Planning for more later on.

The venting is the last step before the real fun starts so please help.

Hey MJ,

I suspect there are 2 main concerns...

If there is a back draft you can 1) blow out your pilot and 2) possibly fill your home with poisonous gas...... a gas that you may not be able to smell. Messing with furnace airflow sounds risky...

I think it is much safer if you can tap into your stove or your bathroom exhausts.

Hummm, I see what you mean, that would be bad indeed.

Plan B is to use the bathroom for venting.

The bathroom vent is 9 ft away, when I turn it on air only blows into the bathroom. Would I be able to rig a new fan inside the grow room so it exchanges air out without using the bathroom’s fan just the venting, so I can have suction as well? :-?

HEy MJ,

If I understand correctly..

YES, you can have 2 fans sharing the same venting tubing.. and you can get a good BATHROOM fan for cheap at your local big box hard ware store. The key will be to connect your grow room vent to the bathroom vent as close too the OUTSIDE wall as possible... you don;t want the grow room fan blowing air into your bathroom.. LOL..

YOU could also hook up 2 fans... ONe in your grow room blowing air out into the DUCTING and then another fan near the outside wall PULLING air up and out.

This will insure the exhaust goes outside rather than in your bathroom..

Yes, that helps. I like the two-fan idea. I know they are dumb questions that have been asked about a million times before, thanks for your patience.

I hope that this is my last question:

How do I keep a passive intake but have the room remain light tight? It is a closet with a sliding door.

Hi MJ,

A couple thoughts on the passive intake and light leakage..

1. NEW/FRESH Air will find its way in through the cracks
2. you could use ducting and make sure you put a few bends in it.. usually these bends will deflect any light threat.
3. I wold also recommend a screen or a simple cloth filter in the ducting.. this will help keep out bugs and reduce light issues

It is always nice chatting with people on the boards... and the discussion with you is my pleasure.

All right, ditched most of the original idea. I am thinking of putting my exhaust directly into a cracked window only 2 ft away. Would this work fine, or is there some kind of rule against putting duct out a window?
