VERO 29D and A lot of confusion!

Hi, could you please help me to understand which is the best MW driver for 200-250W DIY cob led?
I will use an arctic64 active heatsink(alpine 11 seems to be small) so 25°C may be not utopy.

VERO29D need
37.2V at 1.4A
36.5V at 1050mA
and 38.7V at 2.1A

I' ve a 70x70CM grow box (2.3 ft) so i think 200-250W should be enought, isn't it?
Ley's see the driver oprions:

X5 COBs driving from HLG-185H-C1050 but it would give me only 191W but a very good efficiency, low heat, maybe a poor photons penetration but i'm not sure about that.

X4 COBs HLG-185H-C1400 would not give me enought volt MAX190V, 35.75V instead of 37.2V wiring in serie ..is it not a problem?

X4 COBs HLG-240H-C1750, same problem of the previous and may be the cheaper way to have some extra power in the future...someone say tgat VEROS are good to works harder than cree..

maybe I could I put 5 - 6 COBs on a HLG-120H-C1400? Why not?


i ve a lot of confusion about driver VOLTS...from meanwell datasheet what does it mean for example 95V ~ 190V (1050mA driver) or 71V ~ 143V(1400mA driver)? how could i choose the Voltage output, i know that with internal(A version) or external(Bversion) mean well drivers i can only choose AMPERE output and not Voltage...Am I wrong?

I really hope for a your suggestion also for alternative COB alternative like CITIZEN OR CREE CXB3590 if you think are better(vero29D seems the best choice right now!)

The meanwell 185-1050 will definitely drive 5 x vero 29 @36.5v and be good for your space.its deceiving how such low power can grow good plants.
You can also use the hlg-240-1400b to drive those same 5 vero to about 50w each.

Could i use the HLG-240H-C1400 A? i'm afraid to be not able to install properly an external POT and I'd like to use the POT mounted on driver surface.
Which of the two options would you suggest to get the best yield?...200W by four COBs or 190W by five?

Yes you can use the 240-1400a or b model.with b model if you dont want to wire a dimmer knob/potentiometer you can also just cap off those 2 extra wires and it will give slightly more than 100% power.its how i been wiring all my stuff.
I run alot of cobs @ 1050ma and i think it works awesome.i do have a few setups running @1400ma and also 1750ma and i dont see alot of difference between any of my setups .but if you buy the 240-1400 you can learn how to wire very easy a dim knob and just turn down for less power if you choose.

Also i have those same vero cobs running at 100w in veg and its very bright.could definitely flower under that fixture if i turned it up to 200w over a 2.5 x 2.5ft area no problem

Thanx, i think i ll go with 5VEROs with hlg-240-1400b, it has a good efficiency also when dimming and could me some useful extra power.

Do you think CPU heatsink artic64 would fit well?
there's any light scheme i must follow?

Hi, sorry, I meant light configuration.
About passive heatsink are dfficult to find in europe, from usa or china thete are expwnsive ship costs and custom taxes...here i can only easy find mechatronix or cpu acrive heatsink...any suggest?

Hey man, may I ask you were are u going to buy cobs, drivers, etc?

Big difference between the two. 4 x 4 i would say 12 to 16 depending on drive currents.for a 5 x 5 about 16 to 20 cobs.see if your running 50w per cob you will need less cobs then if you only run @ 35w per cob.30 to 50w per sq ft is good.im doing great with less than 25w per sq ft but i guess its not the norm because almost everyone here recommends that 30 to 50w per sq ft lol.
So if it was my 4 x 4 tent i would put 3 rows of 4 cobs in there @ 50w ,it would be awesome imo. :)

Sorry to get off track but how many of these vero gen 7 cobs do you think i would need to run roughly a 4x4 to 5x5?
I use 2x 4 cob panels in my 4x4. 4x 3000k Vero 29D gen 7's ran @ 2.1 amps per panel. And 2x 320h-c2100b's. Pulls around 675 from the wall total. 80 watts per cob.

Used 5 panels in a 6.5x6.5 with amazing results as well. Around 900+ µmol for both setups..

Do you think 3 rows with 3 cobs each totaling 9 cobs ran at high wattage be able to cover a 5x5 area and yield like a hps or better?

I meant to ask you the same thing, im having a light built and im trying to see how many cobs i will need. Im trying to keep the number of cobs down but crank them up higher so im not losing any intensity. Will 3 rows of 3 cobs each work? They will strictly be flowering lights and i want to beat my hps yields

When you cap the dimmer wires off the driver, do you twist and cap the wires together, or cap each separately?

I had them twisted before I picked up a pot and when I saw the light output for the first time I was blown away. However, when I attached the pot, I couldn't believe the output was twice as intense!

Anyway, I'm thinking about the difference between the two scenarios... specifically what completing the circuit (twisting the dimmer wires) actually "did"...

Any physicists out there?
