CFL's are good to use for veg and for flowering i would at least have 100w per plant ( i use 150w per plant ) but ya CFLS are nice to grow with bro u can get em at walmart and they're pretty cheap

depends, if you can get cooling in there go for high pressure sodium from the get go, you can get a 100 and 150 watt HPS bulb with a E26 base, which will let it fit in a standard american fixture. you just need to find a fixture to mount it on, the 100w will fit in a 125w clamp light from H.D...... one of those will blast out 9000+ lumens for 100 watts, compared to around 6000 for CFL's(i think)... but CFL's dont heat up, unlike HPS which will burn skin and get hot as the sun......i use CFL's but i'm into flowering right now and wish i'd gone for the 100w HPS before, but my old growbox didn't have a fan so my plants would've been toast... my next grow i'm going for the 100w HPS to accompany my CFL's fo'sho'...i don't get it now cuz its my first grow and i cant spend more money on it for now....

Yeah dude, combining is a good idea. I started and continuing with 150 watt HPS but for sure will use cfl's additionally for the next ones

lots of different angles on this, here's one more
if you are willing to buy the full fixture(which can be expensive), hid is pretty attractive
if you want to cobble something cheap and easy(fairly), cfl's are very good in that way
good bud can be done with either

you can build a cheap 300 watt HPS setup with two of the following:

http://www.homedepot.com/h_d1/N-5yc1vZ1xr5/R-100664506/h_d2/ProductDisplay?langId=-1&storeId=10051&catalogId=10053

http://www.dallaslightbulb.com/hig-lu150-m-c-249-p-1-pr-923.html

in total thats gonna run you about 50 bucks.... 16000 lumens per light,

but you need a good fan... it's no joke, i talked to a buddy of mine back home and he was running some hps lights and his a/c wasn't cutting it... i think he was running 2 600watt HPS in one same room and his little window a/c would burn out... they are hotttttttt

you would need some daylight CFL's during veg too i think.....

good luck!

What about a ballast to fire the bulb?
Get a 400 watt HPS setup, can be found on ebay for 150 bucks or so. You can also get a 400 watt MH bulb. The HPS ballast will fire it fine.

I grew in a closet that was 4ft. wide, 3 1/2ft. deep and 8ft tall and I started out with one 250-watt MH for veg and one 250-watt HPS for flower and then added a second 250-watt hps for flower and I never had temps above 80 degrees .. later I switched to a 400-watt and still did not have heat issues. The door was open during the hours the lights were on and I sealed it in a way so there were no light leaks during dark hours and just opened it and closed it when needed and it worked great.

It wasn’t the best setup I ever had by any means but since it was the best I had to work with at the time I went with it and it worked great.

i didn't know that... i just figured that a 100 watt bulb in a 150 watt rated fixture would work...

never mind, just read up on how they truuly work... it's the a/c cycle that makes the ballast necessary.... if i understood correctly...

If i was just starting out, and i was worried about heat, i would buy 3 "68" watt CFL's from home depot. That would give u 4200 lumens times 3 = 12600 lumens, and if u wanted to make sure the buds were tight i would add a 70 watt HPS. This would add 6000 lumens.
You can get this light with the ballast at home depot for 45 to 50 bucks. The high pressure light bulbs only work with the appropiat wattage and ballast.

Each CFL 68 watts $15 a piece

clip ballast = $7 a piece

70 watt HPS $50

total spent abot $120 give or take. Total lumens for one or two closet plants 18600 lumens. Not a pound but a tight ounce or two.

that's a pretty good choice for vegging
for flower, you would like 'redder' cfl(s), might add some smaller 2700k cfls during flower

sound mate.. so how do u no when there ready for flowering then??:leaf:
you can flower at any time, depends on how large you want to go
i vegged to 5 inches then went 12/12, went to 29 inches, this was NL which is pretty squat

sickness!!:leaf:
Make sure u don't use high wattage CFL's stay 68 watts and under, the more higher the wattage the lower the lumens per watt go. Thats how CFl's work. Add more lights not bigger wattage lights. You should be good. Once u harvest u will know exactly how much light you want, because low yields make u wiser.:wall:
