I know a 400w covers a 4ft by 4ft area... was just wondering what a 600w covers?
Good question. Anyone know, cause I use a 600 watt in a 2'x4' grow area in a 2'x8'x8' closet. I want to expand into a larger area, just need to know the maximum area for the light.

So... can anyone confirm...

I was going to get a 250w for my little 1.7x0.5x0.8m cupboard grow... but for the money i might as well get a 600w and a grow tent - just want to know what area a 600w covers and im sure it will help out some people on here too.

thx.

For that small of an area you would be better off with a 400 due to heat.If your going to expand your grow youll need the 600, but in that small area you had better have a 6 inch vortex

Grow Light Area Coverage Your growing area determines what wattage system you should purchase. Determine what size garden you want before you purchase a system. Growing areas can also be expanded by adding additional lights and by using a light mover.

  • Primary light (no natural light) coverages for the different grow light wattages are as follows.
    • 100 watt lights: 1.5FT x 1.5FT growing area
    • 150/175 watt lights: 2FT x 2FT growing area
    • 250 watt lights: 3FT x 3FT growing area
    • 400 watt lights: 5FT x 5FT growing area
    • 600 watt lights: 6FT x 6FT growing area
    • 1000 watt lights: 8FT x 8FT growing area

Thanks for the replys folks...

Brick top that was very handy... the main reason i was asking all this is that a 600w hps system isnt much more expensive than a 250w one so if im gonna buy one i might as well get the better one... and an area big enough to grow it in (ie a decent grow tent) = more room, better coverage and ultimately a nicer place to grow my buds (",)

Uh, what?

Now I know people have different opinions about lotsa things, but I want someone to come to my house and show me that a 400 watter covers a 5x5 area or that a 1000 watter covers an 8x8 area............no offense to anyone, but that chart is laughable.

I always err on the side of too much light, so I was thinking about putting supplemental fluoros in as side lighting in my 4x4 Sun Hut with a 1000 watt HPS (just as a point of reference).

I can also say that my 400 watt in my 2x4 tent does not have adequate coverage all the way out to the walls going lengthwise.

HTH.

Oh, sorry, I didn't answer the OP's question - I'd feel comfy with a 600 watter covering a 3x3 area, but you could probably max it out at 4x4 - again, we're talking real light coverage, not a candle's worth of light on the perimeter of your garden.

A good rule of thumb to use is that you'd like 40 watts per square foot (for flowering, you can get away with 25 or 30 for vegging).

Good luck.

600 watters are the most efficient lamp made. 1000 watter will make more light but the lumens per watt is higher with a 600.
Also, 600 makes much less heat than a 1000 so you can get the lamps closer. So in the end your plants will in theory get as much or more light from a 600 than a 1000 if use set them properly and use less power and less heat.

I am running a 600 watt MH in a 4x5 room and find that it covers the room, but I have also supplemented it with 10 26 watt cfl's and I seem to be getting good growth
