What did I do wrong?

Hey guys,

I'm trying to figure out what went wrong with my plants. I have (had?) two clones from a friend. They seemed to be rooted well in the rockwool cubes they came in—they could be picked up by the stem without coming out of the cube, and root tips were beginning to emerge from the bottom/sides of the cube.

I'm using a bubble bucket setup—I have two buckets set up. The buckets are assembled from parts bought at the local hydroponics store. I'm using Fox Farm hydroponic Grow Big, Big Bloom and Tiger Bloom in accordance with Fox Farm's hydroponic feeding schedule—I am using Fox Farm because the mother plant was grown using the Fox Farm schedule (albeit, the mother was grown in soil). Light is being supplied via a 250w metal halide lamp which hangs about a foot and a half above the plants. I have a fan setup keeping temps around the plants at ~70-74F. I've been feeding the plants a diluted dose of the week one regimen. As a matter of fact, I've been using the dosage recommended for seeds/cuttings as per the chart. All ferts were mixed with RO water. I've been PH balancing using a digital meter and GH PH Up/Down. The PH is kept between 5.8 and 6.3 as per the Fox Farm instructions.

As of today, the plants have been in their buckets for four days. It seems to have been a steady decline since day one. The leaves are just yellowing, curling and dying. However, the plants do feel firmly seated still. If I gently pull on a dead leaf, the stem feels resilient. I read that the plants may be feeding off of stored energy in foliage while root systems develop. Any thoughts?

I've been trying to keep the rockwool cubes moist while they are in the buckets, and keep the hydroton surrounding them semi-moist as well. The water level is just above the bottom of the net pot. I've read some articles saying it should be just below, just above, dead even with, or gradually adjusted as needed.

I feel like I'm swimming in a sea of info and getting completely lost. Apparently, I'm doing something wrong. Wish I knew what it was. It's depressing looking at these things. Ideas? Am I just being impatient or is this thing really going down hill that fast? The plants look fried and sad.

How are you keeping them damp? It doesn't matter where the water level is, what matters is how wet the top of the cube is, and if it is consistent. There are multiple ways to do that. One is described in the link below. From your description you are doing everything else right so maybe it is watering. What are your temps and humidity?

Thanks for the reply. My temp is 73 on avg. and RH is at 31%. I've been working to increase RH by running a humidifier, but it's only up from 28%. I've been keeping the cube and rocks damp by squirting them periodically with RO water.

Would really need some pictures to properly see whats going on here. Although it seems you are "doing it by the book" I would'nt waste much energy on these two if there as bad as you say. Good luck, I'll be praying to the pot gods for ya.

In bubble buckets, the most overlooked factor is water temperature. The water gets too warm too fast cause of the overhead light. Try to keep your water temp at 68F MAX.
