what does it mean when the ballast is digital?

i know what digital means but how is a ballast digital, i looked around for this i could not really find anything on it, can someone enlighten me please?

In the inner workings, I think "analog" ballasts use large wire wound transformers, and "digital" ballasts use transistors.

Analog ballasts often have a characteristic "hum" to them that you might notice somewhere with old florescent lights, or the mercury vapor "security" lights.

Digital ballasts use transistors which should push more lumens out of your bulb than a comparable analog ballast would. So it makes better use of your bulb.

Transformers are made of a bunch of wire wrappings which means an analog ballast usually weighs much more than its digital counterpart.
