Clinton: $5,000 for Every U.S. Baby

WASHINGTON (AP) - Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Rodham Clinton said Friday that every child born in the United States should get a $5,000 "baby bond" from the government to help pay for future costs of college or buying a home.

Clinton, her party's front-runner in the 2008 race, made the suggestion during a forum hosted by the Congressional Black Caucus.

"I like the idea of giving every baby born in America a $5,000 account that will grow over time, so that when that young person turns 18 if they have finished high school they will be able to access it to go to college or maybe they will be able to make that downpayment on their first home," she said.
The New York senator did not offer any estimate of the total cost of such a program or how she would pay for it. Approximately 4 million babies are born each year in the United States.

Clinton said such an account program would help people get back to the tradition of savings that she remembers as a child, and has become harder to accomplish in the face of rising college and housing costs.

One way of building a stronger economy, she said, is "more savings, starting with the so-called baby bonds idea where every person born in this country would be given that kind of account because we want to make an investment in America's young people."

She argued that wealthy people "get to have all kinds of tax incentives to save, but most people can't afford to do that."

The proposal was met with enthusiastic applause at an event aimed to encourage young people to excel and engage in politics.

"I think it's a wonderful idea," said Rep. Stephanie Tubbs Jones, an Ohio Democrat who attended the event and has already endorsed Clinton. "Every child born in the United States today owes $27,000 on the national debt, why not let them come get $5,000 to grow until their 18?"

Blake Zeff, a spokesman for the senator's campaign, said a baby bonds program "is not a firm policy proposal but an idea under consideration."

Britain launched a similar program in January 2005, handing out vouchers worth hundreds of dollars each to parents with children born after Sept. 1, 2002. Earlier this month, Time magazine proposed a $5,000 baby bond program.

The post was "a chicken in every pot". Actually the text sounded more post-civil-war. It sounded like buying votes with the slogan "forty acres and a mule". America needs to wake up to the platitudes of self-righteous liars who had tea-parties with chi-comms for campaign donations. Not to mention other later day liars, from both parties, trying to buy votes with impossible promises.

Hogwash, I'm still waiting for my 5 grand. If you give it to newborns, what about 1 year olds or 2 year olds etc. This has to be a joke. If this was really said, then she is too lame to be president. I didn't like her to begin with and only alluded to voting for her if she was the nominee against any repuke except Ron Paul, otherwise, I can't tell which Dem. will end up being the least stupid as that is who I'll vote for, so far it appears that Biden is the most presidential.

Its no joke Med. She actually threw that out in a speech she gave to African Americans in a poor area. Hey, its all about votes, right? ~lol~

And, you're correct that she's too lame to become president. If she's the candidate, she will be defeated in a landslide. Most of America is NOT left-wing ... but somewhere in the middle.

I believe you are wrong. If any democrat loses it will be a victory for the Diebold company. A republican cannot win unless the democratic candidate gets caught in a bathroom with a wide stance, and that is more of the republican venue. LOL`. I think it is Hilarious that the biggest Clinton Basher for his BJ, got caught trying to give a cop a BJ. Thats called Karma.

So, were back to Clinton's BJ, huh?

My point is, if Hillary is nominated as the candidate for the Democrat Party, every Libertarian, Republican and other thinking Americans will turn out to vote against her. You hang your political hat on the edges of the extreme left, Med ... so I don't believe you have a realistic grasp on how hated the woman is. Like I said, most Americans are on the middle ground when it comes to politics, and that's why Hillary wears the mask of a moderate when she's talking to middle-of-the-road voters. When she talks to her true base, she suggests idiotic things like "$5000 dollars of federal money to each new born in the country." And that, by the way, is the topic of this thread, not Bill's BJ.

But Bills BJ is much more interesting than a Hillary Fopaw. Thats the problem with the right, They will pick up on a little fopaw and blow it all out of porportion, like Edwards little dillema. Geeze, I wish the Democrats were as fucking mean and trivial as the repukes. I guess that's what brings out the Hate. The repukes, the party of mean and hate. That's why you fit right in VI, you hater you.

you keep acting like these are little slips or accidental things.

med, hillary and edwards and obama are lawyers. they are trained in how to say things properly and they have a high comprehension of the language they use when addressing us "savages".

i don't see why you are so steeped in party loyalty if you're independent. the demobots will literally say anything in their quest for power.

Being independent doesn't mean I have to be stupid. I am going to vote for the lessor of the evils. To me the most evil are the repukes, Sans Paul, and therefore the Dem candidate whomever he-she may be offers less meanness and giving to the elites than the dems. The dems are more people oriented and the repukes are more business oriented. since I don't presently own any businesses, I'm leaning left. If Paul becomes the candidate (Highly unlikely) I will have to make an informed decision. As long as he doesn't fuck with my SS or VA medical, I'll vote for paul, but the odds are loooooong.

Here in sunny ole england, they are already giving each new born child the equivalent of 1000 usd that goes into stocks and shares for the hope that when they reach adulthood they are not instantly thrown into the depths of debt.

My eldest daughter had one and after the first year she was down to 900 usd. Still waiting for the report back after year 2 she's just coming up to her 3rd birthday so she's probably in debt with it now.
