What is the evolution of political parties in the US?

Yes this is an American National Government question. I sort of have my own idea, but I would like to hear yours.

I'd say they've actually devolved. George Washington warned against political parties in his farewell address. Washington's administration was nonpartisan. I'd venture to say that partisan politics have significantly contributed to the downturn of America. For evidence of this, simply look at the news headlines.
