what would happen if ...

i have two 12v computer fans i use as intakes for my grow space
i would like to know what would happen if they got covered in water while on
i run them from a mobile phone wall charge that is 12v output
i know you should not have electric items on the ground and i would not put a real mains voltage fan down on ground level because i know that would electrocute you. but how about the 12v set up with the charge. will it still trip a fuss or will it become live from mains as in 240v and still electrocute you

Every electronic item has a tiny bit of smoke built inside
Once the water shorts it out the puff of smoke is released and catastrophic failure occurs
At least that is what I heard :D;)

i doubt it would trip a breaker but like the others say its just gonna be bad. your going to burn out all your 12v fans and chargers... possible fire.
make the location as dry as possible ....your room should not be flooding. we all put stuff on the floor.

I have some computer fans that run off 12V that I am going to blow on heatsinks to cool some cobs. They are run from 12V adapters that have switching power supplies in them, not the older transformer kind. If the fans get wet enough to short things out these power supplies generally limit the current at their rated value and other than letting the smoke out of the fans and them no longer working no real harm as long as these adapters do not get water in them. They age generally sealed enough that the real risk is the prongs of them being plugged into the mains getting wet. And more than just an opinion, I do know a little about electronics if that helps relieve your mind.

hmm well i keep all power leads and plugs on my grow room roof. all that goes to the 12v fan is the red/black wires. the power brick will never get wet and its not like id flood my grow room but my res could crack or house pop off so was just wondering what could happen

The water would short out the driver in the fan, it would draw more current, the device (Mosfet) would overheat and blow like a fuse. The power supply might still supply the 12V at say 1A (if that is what it is rated for) which would be about 12W. Might be enough power to evaporate any water in the fan once the water recedes. As long as the fan is not laying directly on your tent I can not see it damaging it. 12V is a safe voltage as far as shock value. I would unplug it first before you clean up the mess though.
