I take from dixie cup/seed into 1 gal pot when she gets 2 inches high, then after she gets 5-6 inches I transplant into 3 gallon pots. There she stays.

i transplant about ever month and a half, when the roots start coming out the drainage holes and your plant is obviously too big for the pot then its time to transplant, i think of it like it grows two direction, just as fast up as it does down, so if your plant is over 3x bigger than the pot, it is obviouse to transplant, i havent had any problems letting the roots get root bound, they seem to always untangle themselves, i dont pull at the roots i just take it out of one pot and put it in the next.

The smaller pot, the smaller yield... when you have to water everydays, transplant ;)

what size pots do I start off with from seeds? and then when do I need to switch and to what size?

Start your germed seeds (or germ right in the soil) right in the largest pot size you will use during your grow that will fit them all under the area your light(s) will cover. The less you handle your plants the better off you will be.

If you use smaller pots to begin with once your plant’s roots begin to circle the pot your plants will be under some degree/amount of stress then by repotting them you can add to that stress by shocking them so to avoid that go as big as you possibly can right from the start and let them grow their entire lives in one large pot.

You do not need to start out in small pots. There is no real benefit by starting out in small pots. It only means more time and effort and more risks and additional cost by having various pot sizes that you of course have to purchase.

I am goinf from 1 gallon to 5 gallon or bigger. This is what subcool advises.

he does 1 gallon then when you see roots coming out the bottom goes to 7 gallons. Big pot means big plant means more buds. I learned this the hard way in 5 in rw. 1 ounce. I want trees now.

I can see a benefit with lighting when using smaller pots. You can fit a half-dozen or so sprouts(in their own 6 oz cups) under a single reflected 26w CFL. They'll develop a nice root system in a couple weeks that'll make transplanting easy. Transplanting multiple sprouts from one container isn't suggested, the root systems would likely have grown together and you'll have quite a bit of shock any way you try to get those roots apart.

Some say a gallon per foot. Then again I've seen some nice micro grows in 16 oz cups.
