I do let everything dry out pretty well and I squeeze the soil around in the flexible container and break it up before each water.

Are you " breaking it up good " before potting ?

Oh hell yeah. I get my hands down in there and bust it up fine. Add a little extra perlite too. But yeah I like to keep the soil soft for good root growth.

I am going to get a few smart pots next grow. And go to 5 instead of 3 gallon.
