Why are my stems turning black and snapping?

OK. Slow down. I think your trying to put the cart before the horse. Lets start with what you got. Starting with Aerogarden you got 1 of them so good place to start. Do you have added air to it (ie. Air stone or 2 in the rez). Do you have a Ph test kit or meter if not get 1. There is nothing wrong with germing in a paper towel if you catch the seed before it curls up. I find I have a hard time if I don't catch the little buggers just when they split the shell. If the root curls it can be a pain. I have had 1 snap the main taproot trying to straighten itself out.

So step by step of how I do it.

1) Get AG(AG= Aerogarden) set up and running. That means you have the rez full, and ph correct. You also have the AG cups in place and the AG sponge in the cup. At this time it's a good idea to poke a hole all the way through the sponge with a tooth pick. So the taproot can find it's way down easily. I would let this run for 24 hours. Keeping a eye on the Ph to keep it as close to 5.8 as I can with out playing the up, and down game. When you have gotten this far. Your AG is ready to receive a seed. I should also note that the AG has the little paper covers, with the hole in the middle that go on top of the cups they should be in place and you should have the little humidity domes on.

2)Paper towel germ your seeds. It will take 1 to 4 days for them to split. I check mine 3 times a day. Once when I get up, once when I get home, and once before bed. I want to catch it just as it splits or very shortly after.

3)Now comes the hard part. When I get one that split and has like a 1/16" to 1/8" taproot started. I very very carefully. place it in the AG sponge. Root down, and I Push it in the hole I made with the tooth pick. Now I know that the AG sponge has a little indentation for the seed. I push mine in so the top of the seed is flush with the bottom of that. Like I said into the hole I made. This will give it a little resistance as it grows. So the root will grow down and not just push the plant up and out of the hole . If it does push the plant up, and the root doesn't go down. You will need to use something to open up the hole and slide the root back in very carefully. I use forsips to open the hole up and slide the root back in and then just let the hole close around it. Now that I have gotten this far. I make sure I have the paper cover on the cup,(they block the light from the top of the sponge) and the humidity domes are in place.

4) After 4 or 5 days. Sprouts will be very close to the humidity domes. So you should remove them just before they are tall enough to touch them. But leave the paper cover in place. (If I plan to transplant I do it on the 7th to 10th day before I get to many roots going. Less stress for the plant)

5)Rez change. What I do is use a 1/4" tube to siphon off about a Gal. of water. AG's are about a Gal. and a half. So I just replace 1 Gal for a rez change. The 1/4" tube will take a little longer but I can control it and not suck up roots trying to get the water out. Also if you only do a Gal. at a time. Your Ph will stay much more stable. The half Gal. you leave in the rez acts like a buffer and helps to keep things stable. Remember hydro is 5.8 Ph and dirt is 6.5

Hope this helps and hope you get some good grows going. Good luck

Thanks. It wasn't that long ago I was the one wanting to know how to do it. So I try to help were I can. I hope this helps him. I think he just needs to slow down and take a deep breath and read some other post. Lots of good info here. Just need to take the time to read it.

I should also add that a golf ball makes a good light blocker for the holes your not using. Also when You take the humidity domes off. I put a 4" Mossy fan on the deck of the AG and let it blow the sprouts gently to help strengthen the stem. Take note of the word gently. I mean that.

OK. I'm done this poor guy is going to think I'm tryin to highjack his thread. Peace out

P.S. +rep and subed it

Thank you so much for your help. I have read just about everything on this site. This site gave me the confidence to try this in the first place. I really appreciate your advice. i read your first couple of threads when you started, so I am glad to see you have found success.

Here are a couple of concerns that I have and I would apprecaite your input.

1) I have the AG veggie pro 6 pod. I have a mylar lined grow tent. I have PH test kit (liquid) and PH up/down. I have the Ag HOOD plus 6 100W CFL. Although I only used the AG hood for the first 2 weeks. I check the PH 3 time a day and general do ont have to change much. I use distilled water. I am also using Fox Farm Nutes Trio liquid.

2) Here is wher I have apparently made an error. I read that you should not disturb the seeds while in germ. So I put them in moist paper towel between 2 plates and put them ina warm dark place. I waiting 3 days and my tap roots generall are 1/2 inch long and curled at the 1/4 in mark. I have the long AG grow material for the veggie pro. I took a razor cut it down the side, had the top of the seed about 1/16 of inch above the top of the soil. I insert the seedling while uncurling the taproot. Is this the problem that may have casued the stem rot?

3) I never knew to cover them with a paper cup to block light. I used the humidy domes. Should I put a paper cup OVER the dome? Shoudl it be black to block all light? I though that you wnated them to get light.

4) Here is a big question that I ca not find an answer for. Should I have the TOP of the AG grow material touching the BOTTOM of the label? I have the master agrdner set so I have the plastic two "net" that holds the elongated grow material of the veggie pro. Currently I have the bottom of the AG material closer to the bottom of the net. This creates a 1/2 inch gap between the top of the AG material AND the bottom of the label. My fear is light is squeaking by and causing the stem rot. What do you do with yours? Do you do anything to make the AG material "Stick" to teh bottom of the label?

5) How long to you leave the paper cup on? I change the rez once a week. My REZ only holds a little over a gallon to the fill level. SHould I fill above the fill to here level? Would that soak the grow material?

6) I have liquid nutes. What is the best way to add them. I have tried two different ways and both ended in disaster. The first is to take the Fox Farm reccomended dose. For example they say 3tsp per gallon. I add the water. Add the 3 tsp of grow big. That seemed to kill my first plants. Teh second time (this time) I took a gallon of distilled water added teh 3 tsp grow big. I filled the rez with distilled water 75% then I filled it with the premixed solution. I checked the PH in the water and the bute water and correct to 5.5.

+ rep Thanks!

Hey hey guys. All I can tell you is I have big problems when I have to try to straighten that dam taproot. It just never goes good for me. That's why I try so hard to catch them early. Before they curl.

Yeah the top of the sponge can touch or be just below the label. that label is the paper cover that will block the light from getting into the rez. No cups needed.

Also be very careful of the FF nute's they burn. I made the switch to the GH line. There cheeper and more plant friendly. If you stay with FF. You should start out at 1/8 the recommended usage. When I do the rez change. I get the gal that's going into the rez ready the day before. I add the nutes, and any root enzymes or boosters that I plan to use. That gives me a day to get the Ph and the PPM right. Now when I top off the rez in between changes. I use just Ph correct water no nutes.

And lastly. Do you have added air like a air stone. That little one in the 6 pod is not enough really. You will find this is a must and could be the biggest contributing factor to your stem problem. Stems and roots love air as much as they love water.

Good Luck and Good Growen. Peace Out.

Thanks for the clarification on the label. I thought you had a paper cup on top of the dome.

I have a 30 gal pump with a splitter and 2 airstones, along with AG pump.

I dont have a PPM meter. I have ingnored PPM. Is this a terrible idea. The PPM meters I saw were like $80 and that is more than I can afford.

Is GH General hydroponics??

When I change my rez I do not clean it. I wipe it out with a rag and rinse. Should I SANITIZE it like I do after my first attempt. I use a 1/4 cup chorline bleach and 1 rez of water, like AG recceomneds. SHould I do that with each rez change.

not sure it shows it to be grey to me and that is negative. I think you need to make sure its green when you click it.

OK. You have lots of air that's very good.

If you look on Ebay there is a cheep PPM meter by Hanna. If you can't afford that then just stay way low on your nutes. Your using Fox Farm and that stuff will burn your plants real easily. Yes GH is General Hydroponics. If you look on there web page. They have all kinds of charts. I live by the recirculated chart. I modify it a bit for the auto plants. They tend to skip some steps of growth. What ever you use. Start off low and work your way up. Also take good notes. So you can refine whats working for you, and you can fix whats not.

No to the sanitizing. I wouldn't even wipe it out. You would need to disturb the little sprout way to much for my liking. Like I said I do a slow bleed off of about a Gal. then add new back. I never ever move the rez. It is in it's place till the end of the grow.

If you know my threads check out my Blue Streak thread I just posted a pik of a plant that is fully grown in a AG. It's week three of flowering.
