Zip ties

This is my first grow and I'm using Led's. I've encountered all kinds of issues, starting with mites inherited from the clones I bought (no extra charge!). I got rid of the mites after spending more than a month using every known safe bug killer I could find. Diatomaceous earth, neem oil, mighty wash, etc. I don't even remember all the stuff I used, and I don't know what worked best either, but I have a shelf with about 10 different bottles of stuff that deals with the bugs.

Another major problem I had was 90+ temperatures during the first few weeks of flowering. The plants didn't stretch, like everyone told me they would! At one point the plant room smelled like death. I bought a portable air conditioner and tried that, but it overloaded the circuit and knocked the power out. Fortunately temps cooled down, and I installed a dual fan in the window for recycling the air from outside. Now temps are in the mid 70'd to low 80's.

Another headache has been led's. So much conflicting advice on this subject when searching the internet. I bought led's from Apollo, g8, tao, ebay. One ebay vendor sold me a supposedly 600w led for $200, but when I tested it (with a $25 voltmeter from Amazon), it was only drawing 200 watts. It had the right number of 3 watt leds, but they were only being powered by 1 watt, wheras everyone else powers those at around 2 watts. I got my money back, but was out return shipping and it delayed getting adequate light on some of the plants. That ebay vendor had around 1000 reviews 99.8 percent positive. Unfortunately, I'm one of those positive reviews, as I left it before I discovered the vendors deception.

Next grow I will try a scrog method or variant. This time I let them grow however they wanted from 3 gallon pots. As a result, I had problems with limbs not having enough support, and hanging far from the lights. In some cases dropping below the pot surface, and getting worse.

So, zip ties to the rescue! The ties can be connected, so there was no problem with the length either.

That's all folks, 1st post!

Yea, my first grow was rough too! If you have the money and you still want to stick with LED I would personally recommend Advanced LED. I have the 100W found at (http://advancedledlights.com/3w-led-grow-lights/new-diamond-series-leds-extreme-3w-led-technology/), and it took me from seed to flower beautifully. I got about 60g cured, not a lot but better than what I expected for my first go round. I also hear Area 51 being mentioned a lot by big members on this forum, just dont have any personal experience with them.

You might also check out Low Stress Training on your next grow. You basically just bend your plant over and tie her down, force her to bush out and make a flatter canopy instead of growing up in the usual tree shape. Not only will it help you spread your LED light out over more flowers, I believe that type of training (LST) helps form stronger branches and stems. Should help with your weight problem during flower!

If I had to pick one little thing that's gets used in dozens of spots around my grow it would be 6" remove able Zip Ties.
I secure Lights, cords, ducts, plant branches , string them together for length they do everything.
So yes use those zip ties but spend a extra 2 bucks a hundred and get the reuse able

Great post my friend, and welcome to RIU.

Sounds like you've got the determination to get this thing down :)

Let us know details of your grow... square feet, lights, ventilation, strains, medium etc

Regarding the zip ties, I used to use them but then I bought a long roll of thin velcro, cut it into 3/16" wide strips, then when I need to tie something, I just cut one of those to length.

kinda funny looking.

just a suggestion, you can stick 3 bamboo stakes in the soil around the perimeter of the plant and run string around those stakes to support plant branches. it'll look a little neater.
