Winter outdoor harvest in SoCal, is it possible?

So I have a question, I live in SoCal and we don't really have a winter were it freezes. The coldest it gets is about 45-50°f at night USUALLY and 60-80°f during daytime USUALLY. I've been vegging my plants under a T5 for a month and a half and last week put my plants outside for a winter harvest. They should all be done by xmas since they are all Indica dominate starins. Will they be ok and grow to there full potential. I usually grow outdoors but in the spring into fall. Any advice will be appreciated. They are getting 7 hours of direct sunlight and about 12 or 13 hours of daytime. Thanks in advance

I have some late seed starts out right now that are currently flowering. I'm probably looking at mid-november for most of them, but I've had plants go well into December with no issues.

So yeah, it's definitely possible. I can't say if they'll grow to full potential, although I've been pretty happy with the quality I get from late season starts.

i have two buddies in the same boat as you. just started flowering outdoors maybe 2 weeks ago.

it kind of just depends. its definitely possible.
only thing you have to watch out for is a 3-4+ day storm once you're in flower. if its humid and cold and you got big colas outdoor. you're gonna get budrot.

the thing about socal is when those storms happen seems totally random.

I got fooled by the same charts and wondered why my outdoor plants weren't flowering. On Dec. 21 here in SoCa, yes there are 10 hours between sunrise and sunset (and, 14 hours between sunset and sunrise). But none of that really matters because it isn't dark enough to cause flowering right after sunset. What we REALLY need from those charts is now much "Astronomical Twilight" there is (and isn't) in the day. My chart tells me that there are 11 hours (not 14) of dark on the day of the year with the longest night when you consider astronomical darkness (the level of darkness needed to see the first few stars in the night sky). Today, I get 10.5 hours of dark.
Sure, in my case, I still couldn't induce flowering (because of city light pollution??) till I started covering my plants at sunset.
Just a thought.

I'm in NW Florida, where we do have a winter. But I usually grow year round when possible. Fall/winter and winter/spring grows are among my favorites. Less rain here in winter. The buds are not always as fat due to less sunlight. And they usually start to flower as soon as they go out, or in my case, become sexually mature. That makes for smaller plants. But worth the time.

Im Northern than you (38°-39° North, 800-900 metres altitude), n rigth now Im growing a Extreme Haze (NL5/Haze X OldTimers Haze; borned on August-16) n a Full Energy (Old Narrow Afghan X OldTimers Haze; borned on September-8)8) that are just starting to flower :

I have germinated a Psilocybo's Mexica Haze (Afrutado Mexicano / Amnesia Hace X Malawi Killer) on the beggining of November; n I have chopped this morning a Destroyer (Meao Thai X Michoacana Verde Limón X Colombiana Punto Rojo) borned on July-20...

PD: Btw, what a tragedy in California now by the fires...

After every summer grow I throw beans back in the garden as a winter grow but for the organic material not for the buds.

These plants will be turned back into the soil along with leaves horse poop and bunny poop sometime in January and the left to breakdown until the summer planting.

The first 2 popped November 3 and pretty much went straight into flower.
I live near Fresno and while it can get down to the 20’s some nights I’m able to keep weed plants growing all winter. You don’t get the big colas or plants for that matter like summer grows but yeah you can still play around during the winter.

I do most of my seed making in winter grows. Less worry about bugs and stuff in winter here {NW Florida}. But I don't compost them. When I have the option of a short veg with lights, I get about an ounce per plant in winter/spring grows. This year my fall/winter crop got knocked off the rails by the hurricane. Haven't dropped anymore seeds, but I need to.

Just wanted to update the thread, I put these out on Oct 28th and are on their 5th week of flower looking like diamonds. You can definitely grow a winter outdoor crop in SoCal!!!

Turning purple now and developing a nice little cola. Temps mid 50’s daylight and mid to upper 30’s night time.

Deadbeat Dad, you're environment sounds exactly like mine. I do outdoor patio grows all year. During veg, plants come inside under an hour of light (to break up the dark cycle). Then I just leave them outside all the time for the flower cycle. I get about 7 hours direct sunlight during the shortest days of the year. I put out an indica on 11/13, it's budding up nicely. I'm sure the buds would be bigger with more light, but not bad size at all. The cold weather definitely slows growth, and I'm getting a lot of purple. Plus, you can't beat our winter for bug free (almost) farming. On the plus side, less nutrient dose when watering. And watering less frequently.

Hello @URaDEADBEATdad

That's a great question. It is definitely possible although the results won't be that great unless you choose the right strain, use a glass house and use supplemental lighting (Just for a couple of hours per day). Then, you could harvest some really good quality buds.:weed:
