Can cops search you're trunk for a routine stop??

OK, I'll tell you about an adventure I had 10 years ago.

I got off work at midnight and took a 30 minute ride towards Pittsburgh to hook up with an old buddy.
Buddy is white but lives in a black section of town. This is down in the Mon Valley where all the steel mills once were. Used to be a 50/50 split of white and black but changed to more like 25/75 as the mills closed down and white people left replaced by black people. A lot of them got grants and HUD mortgages in an attempt to revitalize the area and the housing prices were like a used car after the jobs left. If you can hammer some nails and paint, you could get a place to live there without going broke and the gov't would throw some money at you.

So I get there around 12:30AM. I hadn't been there in years and was using a flip phone with GPS to locate the address.

So it tells me my destination is on the right, but I can't tell which house. So I'm stopped on the road looking at my phone and looking at the houses when a cop drives by staring at me.

Then he gets behind me with bright lights and spot lights so I figure I'll drive around the block and come back.

Then the pig puts his lights on and pulls me over. He's looking at my license when 2 more pig units pull in, now there are 3 pigs in 3 cars lined up behind me.

This sawed off little pig tells me to get the fuck out of my truck and go stand behind it. 2 of them are frisking me while the other goes through my truck.

I had just got off work and had a couple gym bags and 2 smaller bags full of work clothes, showering stuff like soap and shampoo, work stuff like safety lock out locks, micrometers, ID badges, work orders, CO2 air testers, etc.

They dumped everything out all over the seats and floor rummaging through my shit.

While being frisked, they literally took my wallet out and counted the money in it asking me why I needed $300 in cash?

Now they're playing good cop, bad cop was the sawed off little pig threatening to lock me up unless I told him why I was there. With the good cop coming over and whispering to tell him what he wants to know because he gets very angry, while the little one was yelling and screaming about 14 homicides in the last 2 years and screaming rhetorically, "what the fuck is a white guy wearing a John Deere hat in a shiny new truck doing in MY FUCKING NEIGHBORHOOD at 12:30 at night"?

I was detained for 45 minutes. I was searched with zero probable cause. I was written up for making a turn without using the turn signal. But I never turned anywhere on that road.

I had a one hitter full of weed they missed and 2 vicodin and no script in a little pill holder. They missed that too so they must be lousy cops. They told me to sign the ticket and drive away or they wouldn't be so kind the next time.

And I'm a white guy, I can only imagine what would have happened if I were black. No wonder I can empathize with BLM and Colin Kaepernick. The pigs treat everyone like shit in those areas. And they lie and shit all over your civil rights.

They also got the address off my GPS on phone and went to my buddy's house. He told them to get out and go fuck themselves so they left but stayed outside his house for an hour.

Now the cops in my little home town aren't like that, but one hell of a lot of them are. I can personally attest to that.

I called and argued about the ticket, the girl said I'd have to appear in court to beat it. I didn't want to go back down there after that.

I was scared that night. The sawed off little pig appeared unhinged and dangerous.

So in answer to the OP, yeah. They can search anything they want.

Maybe not on paper, but life comes at you fast and what's on paper can get lost in the shuffle pretty quick. I'll never trust the police again. Ever.

I've been watching a lot of these police/public audits on You Tube. The main thing about standing up for your rights is you need to do it when you don't have any weed on you.

Why wouldn't you stand up for your rights if you do have weed on you. The amount of people that only get caught cause they admit to shit is amazing. It's the same charge wether they bring the dog to find it or if you just give it up. They miss shit all the time. Trust me always stand up for your rights. I will refuse a search every time there is no convincing me that there is another option. They aren't gonna take it "easy" on you like they claim. They are gonna book you on the same amount of weight no matter what, the prosecutor decides what to charge not the police that searched.

Don't be disrespectful, try to look and sound as professional as possible when traveling with product. Be as polite as you can and just assert that you know your rights. Oh yeah and if you smoke in your car while riding with more than a misdemeanor charge your and idiot for sure.

Keep the shit it an airtight container, like a nice cooler and bagged in turkey bags or jars inside of that.

About 7 years ago, I was cruising around in my 91 corolla. Two of my friends were with me, and we had just toked up at a church. Before we left, I had the brilliant idea to hide my stash, which was a coffee tin containing my one hitter, some weed, some deems and an deems pipe. One of my buddies hid his stuff with mine, in the trunk behind the liner. The other kept his on him, in a vitamin bottle.

I was pulled over for having a loud exhaust. I explained that the exhaust was loud because the bottom half of the vehicle was rusted out, and that this was only a $400 beater to get me from point A to point B. He then asked if he could search the car, and I, being young and dumb, said yes.

As we were standing next to the highway with the cop searching the vehicle, he motioned for me to come over. When I got there he pointed to the trunk and asked *gasp* "So who's the samurai?" At that point I realized I had left my bokken and kendo swords in my trunk, along with a katana and a double edged throwing knife. I explained that my buddy and I would fight with them, and he took it at face value, but picked up the knife and said "I may or may not give this back to you" (he did).

The vitamin bottle apparently blended in with the trash so well that he didn't even question it.

He eventually let us go, no ticket or anything, and said "You seem like cool kids." If he only knew.

The last time I was pulled over in my town, the cop told me, "DAMN bro, how much weed you got? It smells dank!"

I told him a couple grams and he could look if he wanted.

"no, but slow down next time."

Then we discussed tattoos.

LOL.
You ain't from around here, are you?

In Florida they still put you in cages for smoking.

Don't give that either.....
If you’re pulled over by a K9 SUV why wouldn’t the officer deploy his K9 to sniff?

Even if you’re like sorry officer i was driving like an asshole, the K9 in his vehicle can perform an investigation without probable cause. The K9 can actually provide enough evidence to detain and initiate an investigation too. The K9 is considered a LEO as well.

Bunch of mixed points here... Not sure still if they ask to search if you say YES OR NO
You always say NO. Do not freely give your 4th amendment rights away. They have to have probable cause. Like someone else mentioned, whether you give it to them (by saying yes) or they search and find it anyways, the charge is the same. Plus then you have a chance to fight it in court, and get the evidence tossed. You say no.
