bad transplants and transplant shock???

Today I tried to transplant a young plant into a bigger pot. I guess the soil wasn't as damp as I thought, and, well, long story short, it wasn't the most elegant switch. What I was wondering is how long would it take for a plant to die after a bad transplant? It was about 3 hours ago, and although I made a mess, I managed to keep the bulk of the soil around the roots and got it into the new pot. The plant looks fine, but it did get a little "jiggly" around the base. I smoothed out the soil to support it and it seems okay, but...
Now basically, how long does it take to know you have or haven't killed your plant? If I had caused some kind of transplant shock, how soon would I know? Any suggestions, and also, any tips on transplanting for future grows?

Just wtch your plant , was it really bad like " it fell on the floor" or " the roots got ripped" ? These plants are more versitile than you think . dont give up hope , if you really f**ked up then it will die in a few days, 3-4 .. but it will probably be fine , next time , take your time check everything , make sure you get all the roots by making a hole around the inner part of the pot and digging deep , its hard to tell wut ur dealing with tho , lemmo get some more details but if you didnt destroy all the roots you will probably be fine ..:-?

Thanks Dang, I think it's okay...what i did was cut the pot off around it; I use cheap small pots and I just slice around the bottom and edges; it's worked for me before, but this time, the soil started to crumble, and I just barely got it into the new soil. I don't think I damaged the roots, but I'm still a little vague about how delicate these plants can be. I once had an oak door fall on a plant, and it recovered without a hitch.

I haven't been growing long, but there is one thing I have learned through trying--you can do everything right, but it comes down to the fact that some plants want to live and others don't. I've made stupid mistakes that should have killed plants and didn't, and I've had healthy plants just drop dead by increasing their nutes 5%.

I see you have some nice windows, do you use sunlight or a light system? I live in SoCal, so I try to use the sun as much as possible. Plus, I'm a medical patient and I'm allowed to grow, so I don't worry about choppers, and it really ticks of my ultra conservative building manager that he can't do anything about it.
I love it when the law is finally on the smokers side.

Well, with the legality of it all, and the reputation of doctors having their licenses held up in the balance, the question of "legitimate need" is important.
I firmly believe that you, as the patient, have the right to decide that the therapeutic value of marijuana is valuable to you. Unfortunately, the doctor has the right to decide you don't need it, so I'm sorry they denied you.

See, I really don't like to talk about my medical record, but I will tell you that I do suffer from chronic headaches, but see, those headaches were documented and were part of a diagnosis that had been previously treated unsuccessfully.
See, Wax, I walk a funny line when it comes to this in that, although I don't doubt your sincerity about believing marijuana being medically beneficial to your health, this is a public forum, and I don't want to convey publicly the idea that there is some secret password you can acquire that will get you on the list.
I will say again,I don't think that is what you are asking for. If you are in a situation where you suffer from an illness and marijuana is the only thing you can use for it and you just want to stay out of trouble, then remember, you are ALWAYS entitled to a second, third or however many opinions over your health, but remember that the consultation costs, so be honest with the doc.
Sorry to go off all preachy like that. It's just that I've seen really, really sick people benefit from this stuff, and the lawmakers are just a few pen strokes away from shooting down the whole thing. I don't want to say something that could be misused.
But that being officially stated--yeah, fuck that first doc, read the SB 420 (just google it) and get another opinion.

i usually wait til the soil is pretty dry and you can just grab it by the stem, pull it out of the pot , ive never lost a single root. after repotting i water it so the new soils soak together and tighten up.. your plant sounds like it will be fine, i've never seen one die from transplanting, but im sure if you do it at the wrong time or are too rough it can happen, even if you lost some roots, marijuana is a strong plant, it will regrow them and survive, just be light on the nutes

imo it will live no matter what...leaves might fall off may look like its gonna die but it will survive...NEVER LOOK ON THE DARK SIDE!!

JUst in case you were wondering, the plant is fine. It was just a tricky transplant and I wanted to know how long it takes to know that you are out of the woods. Thanks for the help, my little Sativa is doing great.
