you won't have good mature bud until finish which will be at least 7 weeks from the light switching to 12/12 or whatever light /flowering pattern you use. could be longer depending on which strain you have. good luck

not sure of the penetration specs but i don't seem to get much from 400 W HPS below 2 feet down, so keep them close without burning. keep your canopy up there and full , if light hits the floor it is wasted good luck

i am no expert but I also tried 26w cfl's in a side closet away from my HPS flower room and found the plants growing vertically too much even with plants cloned form short stocky strains. strangely I didn't notice the same thing once i changed them to 45 w cfl's which kept the plants more true...
