150w HPS light....how close to a baby plant?

I have one little baby plant (how cute) it is 4 days old. I have my 150w HPS approximately 17" away (measured from the soil to the light). I read alot that says if you can put your hand over the plant and it's not to hot then it is good. I could lower the light probably 3-4" and it would still be fine, according to the hand test, but I've also read that it is way close for a baby plant.

thats miles away, put it 6/7 inch from top of the seedling, then get it closer in a week or too

1" - 2" away would definitely fry the plants it is an HPS light not CFL's

id put it 4 to 6 use your best judgement put your hand right above the plant and if you dont start burning in a minute it should be all right

Any other thoughts?

in all seroiusness i would place lights 12" apart for like 5 days then lower them 4 " every 4 days till your about 3" above plant

I think I'm going to try this way and see how it works. The plant seems to be doing good with the light where it is right now but I know once it gets bigger and isn't so fragile it'll need it closer. I do also have a fan blowing towards the plant right now and it moves a little bit I just don't want to stress it to much since it is only 6 days old now.

yes it def would!
You have a seedling... which doesn't NEED to much intense light yet...where you have it is fine for now! once she starts to get bigger then the light can be lowered as Needed if you notice they start to stretch for the light!
I keep my 150 hps 6-7 inches away min during veg/flowering any closer and they can get stressed/heat, leaves will start to curl up like a taco! haha

those other guys must be cfl growers, which yes you would want them inches away, but NOT a HPS??? wtf....thats not good to say that if you don't know what your saying !!!...which would def fry em? why the fuck would anyone want to harm someone elses plant??? sheesh...peace

you too??? Wrong!!! Where did you guys get your info from? do you actually do this with a 150 w hps?

since when was this complicated put ur hand under u light when u start to feel a burn on ur hand thats to close now u know the distance + 2 inches for safety.

do u use a hps? do u place it 1 inch away?
if u do u are not growing

A 26w CFL would be enough for this, seedlings don't need much light at all. I would try a foot or two away with a 150w HPS. It will burn it easily.

You're gonna make dude start his plants on fire telling him to put that light that close.... What's the matter with you?

works all the time for me but hate it when i put it a inch away i get a sunburn just on my hand haha rest of arm is pale

You can't even put LEDs that close. My plants started bleaching @ 4" with my LEDs.

What gets me, these are seedlings, they shouldn't even be in the vicinity of any HID lighting yet. At least not anything closer than 12" - 18".

2" away HPS......

Even if you could get them 2" away without incinerating them, it would still be a waste because you wouldn't be getting the footprint as you would if it were like 8" away.
