4000 Watt Setup (Need Generator)(What Kind and Size) +rep


I have four 1000's and i want to run it on a generator....

any info wanted +rep

you need to make sure your ballasts are generator ready and i would get a 7000-8000 watt generator. the 1000 watters will use about 1250 watts each

STOP!!!!!!!!!!!! Read your instructions on your ballasts. They will say the warrenty is voided if you try to use a generator. The power supply isn't consistant enough, and it will burn them, and your bulbs (lamps) out. That's a big no no.

If I lose power, I just run some halogens in the room to keep the light cycle until power comes back. Also, hot starts can kill your ballasts too. If your power goes out, you need to shut down the breaker for 30 minutes before restart.

I use coleman lanterns for co2 and temporary lighting for power failures. You'll need at least a 6500watt generator. Things will go smoother if you hook up to the 240vac. When we are on generators we use two. One 6500w for up time and a 4000w for down time. You won't need as much amperage while the lights are off so you can save fuel by using a smaller genny while your lights are off. A 30 amp dryer outlet will run 3 1000w's, fans and stuff and mother room. I have operated 120vac appliances on 240vac by hooking them together in series. If they are polarize be sure you hook the hot and the common together and plug in the remaining hot and common to the 240vac source. Ballast are usually made to be interchangeable and the wiring diagram is usually on the ballast.

what about diesel generators,? i heard they can run for longer periods of time with out breaking down like a gas one. I know they cost more but i dont care how much they are if they work better

I work on setting up and taking down amusement rides and todays shows all use diesel gennys. They can be about the same(a bit more) as buying hydro if they're kept loaded properly.

yea i met a guy up here were i live and he was running a 45000 Watt setup, 45 lights and he was running it on a he said $20,000 diesel genny

We need more guys like the guy you met up there.

If you had a way to seal up your green house from light every 12 hours it might work better. Even up north the sun gives out more than a 1000w hps in the summer. I grew big buds in a box outside one summer that way.

i did that with my small greenhouse its called "Depo" or "Deprivation Grow"

by blacking out my small greenhouse i get a harvest halfway threw the summer. The Cannabis Clubs were i live wont buy "Depo" bud.
the clubs want indoor, outdoor is depreciating in value every year but the indoor is holding its value.

he's not even a big grower up here, there are people running 200 and even 400 lights up here in there grows

also i could never black out my big green houses they are way to big. i have 2 well over a

100 feet in length.

If you want to use a generator, then you really need to put something like a UPS inline. Not only will a UPS condition the power so that your equipment doesn't suffer from the incsonsitancies that a generator produces V wise. but it will alo run your equipment while your generator gets up an running. From the sounds of the equipment you are running you wouldn't really want to go with much less then a 5kva UPS, and a 8kva Generator.

i am looking at a "Kohler 20KW Compact Diesel Generator" you ever heard of it?

that's plenty big enough for you to expand down the road. the nextgen ballasts are the only ones i know of that are generator ready, it's why i bought mine.

i did not even know cert in ballast has to be generator ready.

i did not think it made a difference

honda eu6500is their inverter type so no surging good even for medical equip....and they can be run parallel to double output pretty sure i know the smaller 1000watt models can their so quiet i work in construction and i would'nt use any other well the diesel route you can't go wrong, but most need a trailer etc....you could go with one of those propane setups by generac etc... but the hondas are portable and quick

I wanna be like that guy man!! I live in europe where ganj is shiiit! only thing i am paranoid about is power...can u give me a quick lesson on "gennys" =] I wanna do hydro and I keep thinking that i am probably gonna face some power outage...good advice I got is to get a accumulator..sort of like UPS for pc's...a good one will run 1000w for 1hour and then it switches to generator. I think accumulators is the future but then again they gotta be recharged....(from neighbours hehe)

so yeah what about those gennys...question number one on a 4000 w grow how long will a needed genny work and ask me to feed her black gold?
