I grew in 55 Gal DIY Sub Irrigation Planters this summer and they worked out better than expected.
I could only really visit my plants once a week. So I needed them to have enough water.

I used this 5 gallon design

With these bins

The two big holes are 3 inches and fit 3 inch net pots perfectly (Filled with a peat mixture it makes a great wick) The water pipe is 2 inch PVC.

Each plant has a min six garden stakes holding it in place with multiple layers of trellis netting.

They looked like this in the spring.

  • Make sure you cut the water pipe on an angle so it doesn't lie flat on the bottom and get plugged.
  • I used a mixture of 80% peat and 20 % soil to make the wick
  • You will need plant supports and trellis netting
I'm going to try this bin from Home Depot next year. It's a Husky bin $29.99 but I think the Reservoir is much larger.
