Asparagus?

I had a 60 ft x 6ft bed of Jersey Giant for about 12 years. Tough to grow in Oklahoma, but well worth it if you have the right climate. The bermuda grass finally took it over while i was away and going through a divorce back in 2010. You gotta plant those roots really deep.. like 18 inches, and throw backfill dirt on it as it grows up through it. Pain in the ass at first, but the rewards are awesome.

How deep is your raised bed and what zone are you in?
In zone 5, raised bed is 8 inches deep but plants can go deep as they want with no Bottom to the Box.

They have been there for 8 years.

Right now we are in Extreme Drought and ground is hard.

I should know planted 8 Blackberries yesterday.

Going to put most stuff in elevated Beds because I have hard time bending over .

Grown it for years, zone 9 (Ca.). It does fine in raised beds, I had to move some from the ground into raised beds and did it in the fall, just after the foliage turned brown and died back, came up fine in the spring. Beds are 5x10 have no bottom and are 12 inches deep. Never had to till it, it spreads pretty well on it own.

Good idea
It takes a few seasons to get good yields
Mine tend to spread on their own as long as I leave the surrounding area sparse on ground cover
Yep!.. I never harvested for the first 2 years. Then around Feb, I'd do a shallow till on the row. I made it 6 ft wide because that's how wide my tiller is. Chopping them up a little seemed to make them multiply.

I wish I had the space for asparagus. They need too much room for the yield they produce for city dwellers like myself with limited space. I'm jealous of you country boys with acres of land that can just dig up another large plot whenever you want.

It is pretty nice… I’ve lived on this 12 acres for 22 years, and there’s square footage I’ve never stepped on. I think that comes out to a little over 522,000 sq ft. About half of it is heavily wooded though.

We had 20 acres sold it to a guy saying I was messing up his Deer Hunting building a House where I was.

Kick myself all the time.
Yeah... I can understand that. When I went through my divorce in 2009, I was gone for 19 months going through it. I got back here, and was sitting with my dad by the pool, and I told him "Maybe I'll just sell the land and house,... I don't think I can wash the bitch off of this place"... He said "They're not making any more land, you better hang on to it"... glad I did.
