Be yourself....

We're taught to be "be ourselves", don't put on a mask and don't let anyone tell you who you should be.

But what if I'm an asshole? Should I put on a mask and pretend to be nice? If it doesnt affect my work or the small group of people i hang out with should I accept that I was born this way and continue this lifestyle?

People who call themselves assholes are try-hards. Yall put more effort into making people think you're an asshole, than actually being who you really are. Just my 2 cents.

My brother is one, but, never with me, just other people.

"Putting on a mask" is just asshole-speak for "I pretend that I don't know how to be cordial". Again, my 2 cents, since we're talking about it.

Our reactions as our reactive mind works are always a little bit different than another..

You react being who you are.. but each (re)action is different. Thus different masks you wear based on different reactions.. its like changing a hair style, clothes or shaving or having facial hair..

I think whether a person should "be themselves" or not depends on a lot of factors.

Does the individual like their "true self"?
Is the individual happy with where they are in life?
Is the individual satisfied with their social life?
Does the "true self" effect the individual's work or ability to work?

Also, I think it's a matter of environment as well. The person I am at work isn't the same person I am at home.

My thought - born this way is excuse for poor behavior, in every aspect. The Bible tells us we need to be born again. We need to shed our sinner selves and become good.

saying what i believe is hysteria...what an asshole thing to say.
I misread the op. At first I thought it was talking about "the mask" lol. Probably because I'm super stoned. Haha. After rereading I corrected.

Plus, we're all allowed to believe what we will, we're not the same, we're not robots. You're free to "believe" what you will. Why does me believing something different make me an asshole?

"What is, in my opinion, hysteria".

So what if someone thinks what you believe is hysteria?

If a person really believes there's something terrible going on, they should do what they think is right. Sometimes what another person finds "hysteria" is a real threat and in that case the doubter will be the one who suffers.

Knowing yourself is more important to others. The more I know of my own struggles and wrongs the more it helps me have empathy.

only a asshole would shit all over somebody else's beliefs (pun intended).
in religion it's called blasphemy. and fer god's sake don't say "well, this ain't religion".
I used an analogy, okay.

Yes. I did say hysteria. Based on my perception and the definition. That's what I'd call it. I mean, if people were dropping dead on soccer fields from covid I'd understand and probably think differently... But they are now dropping dead left n right from vaccine induced myocardial effects... in the middle of games. On performance stages.

Again it's my perception. I don't think you're an asshole for believing what you Do. It's your RIGHT! So perhaps you could extend the same courtesy to those who think differently from you.
