Can I use a 125W CFL in a 250W ballast and reflector grow light?

Hello everyone,

I have a 250W reflector kit with it's ballast and I was wondering if I could use a 125W CFL instead of the 250W MH that suppose to be used? I have some heat and ventilation issues so I was thinking of using a CFL until I get these issues resolved, besides it would only be for the seedling stage not the whole vegetation phase. In any case if there's any electrical nuts out there I would really appreciate any feedback.

P.S.:Socket is the same size for both the CFL and the reflector.

CFL's are designed to work in regular household sockets. What you are asking is a fire / health hazard. I would suggest doing a bit of research, before you ask questions.

Just because you know something doesn't make it common sense. I think you all need to research the true definition of 'common sense' before throwing around the term so loosely and ignorantly.

CFL's are designed to work in regular household sockets. What you are asking is a fire / health hazard. I would suggest doing a bit of research, before you ask questions.
You do realize this thread can be deemed as research, right?

You can't be serious. You obviously don't know what you're saying means. So, yes, you do need to look up the words you're using.

Obviously. However, it cannot be deemed as the things he has listed. He even listed common sense lOl. I took my own advice long ago, hence why I know what the words I'm using mean. That'll be enough feeding the trolls for me though, laterrrr.

Since the above ^^ people decided to argue and not answer your question, I thought I'd take 2 minutes to help you..
250W Ballast you are refering to is to power HID bulbs.
the 125W CFL is self balasted. On the screw lamp holder, you can just take out the two wires that lead to the ballast, and insert a a cable leading direct to the plug socket.
e.g. 250W works like this (= symbol is the two wires, live and neutral (red/brown and blue) - BULB = Ballast = Mains plug sockey
125W should go like this BULB = Socket
the lamp holder can be wired straight to the socket instead of the ballast. Remove the ballast, wire a socket/plug onto the lamp holder, and bobs your uncle.
You can then use your Reflector and lamp holder for your CFL.

Hope this helped

P.S Don't use a MH bulb without reconnecting the ballast
