*Before you post “Use the search feature” understand this is day three of me searching this site, other sites, and talking to friends and family.

First time gonna try and cook/bake. Looking to make some butter. I have a friend that swears you must Decarb your flower/trim then I have family members who say it’s not needed.

This is also true online some say you can Decarb it, some you must and then others that say you done NEED to.

So what do you all think?

Really looking to make some dark chocolate fudge btw

Of course decarb. Anything else is broscience from the newbie snowflake tik tok culture kids that think they're suddenly reinventing everything in life.
Once you realize decarb is necessary you can go use that awesome search function for times, temps, etc. But knowing is half the battle. Yo joe!

.

You can by gizmos for decarbing, like the Ardent. I have one and am very happy with it for decarbing before making coco oil.

You must decarb prior to ingesting if you want the psychoactive effects. If you decarb before making edibles, etc then you know your good. You can cook without decarbing first but run the risk of only a partially decarb, or not at all if temps aren’t high enough long enough. For instance brownies get hot enough on the outside but the centers never get that hot, so only half your product or less will be properly decarbed, so it depends how and what you are making, there is not a yes or no answer. The safest method is to decarb first.

Let me begin with thank you for the explanation. Would you decarb for butter? Or would you decarb and just toss the decarbed bud into the fudge recipe?

Then you make butter/oil or do you just add it into your recipes?
I simmer decarbed weed in butter and water for about 4hrs. Then let it get cold in fridge so there's a hard layer of green butter at top that's easy to remove. Then I just put it in my coffee. But you can cook with it too

I would personally decarb first if making butter, but if you keep the butter at 240 for 90 minutes that should effectively decarb at the same time. I generally make tincture then evaporate the alcohol off leaving a concentrate like honey, then mix that in whatever, from drinks to butter for cookies, anything you can think of is fair game.

I slightly disagree with the link suggesting 220°f for 40 minutes. I like 240°f for 40 minutes better.

And an oven or toaster oven is fine as long as it holds the correct temps. A lot people use a cheap oven thermometer.

And if you want the medical benefits without the buzz, then skip the decarb.

Are you suggesting this as a cheap thermometer or a decent one?

I have never used this specific thermometer myself, but I have used similar cheap one that worked fine. Our oven was off about 10 degrees, and it's a fairly new expensive oven.

I also have a digital meat thermometer that has an extention probe for ovens. Neither one was expensive, the digital was less that $20 if I remember right. BTW it helped my BBQing as well, lol.

For what it's worth, we make a lot of edibles. I filled 50 weed capsules of wedding cake today, and I used a nova fx to decarb with. It works well and cuts the smell down a lot. But I have used an oven, crock pot, sous vide, and even a frying pan before. (we were camping) Now I use the nova fx. Since I bought the fx other cheaper brands of decarb machines have come out. Hopefully someone will chime in with reviews of them.
