Coronavirus -- The politics of disinformation and outright lies

Hydroxycloroquine and "what do you have to lose?"
"A vaccine will be available by the end of the year"
"Lockdowns don't work"
"Its just like the flue

The virus causes fear and somebody or bodies are exploiting those emotions. In a recent survey Carnegie Mellon U researcher find that almost half of the 200 million Twitter posts came from bots. The hysteria-driven propaganda has certainly made its way into recent posts by people who post here.

Nearly half of some 200 million tweets about COVID-19 likely came from bots, with many of them plugging false cures, peddling conspiracy theories and clamoring for the U.S. to drop safety measures in order to re-open America, researchers have found.

Ongoing research by computer scientists at Carnegie Mellon University indicates that a significant portion of the social media conversation about COVID-19 is likely automated amplifications of political perspectives and do not represent individual human authors.
The study has reached no conclusion about which interests may be primarily responsible for the bots, but many of the messages are repeating information from Russian and Chinese state media. During the 2016 presidential election, computer operations linked to the Kremlin were found to be responsible for campaign tweets and other messages that further divided the American electorate by amplifying controversy.

With coronavirus, “We do know that it looks like it’s a propaganda machine, and it definitely matches the Russian and Chinese playbooks, but it would take a tremendous amount of resources to substantiate that,” lead researcher Kathleen Carley, a computer science professor and head of the university’s Center for Informed Democracy and Social Cybersecurity, said in a Carnegie Mellon report last week about the research.
“We do see that a lot of bots are acting in ways that are consistent with the story lines that are coming out of Russia or China,” Carley told VICE.
A European Union study concluded that the Kremlin and pro-Kremlin groups have launched a “significant disinformation campaign” about COVID-19 to sow panic in the West, Reuters reported earlier this year.

The study is ongoing and is now also examining messages on Facebook, Reddit and YouTube.
Jevin West, who runs the Center for an Informed Public at the University of Washington, told Vice last month that

the “real goal” of COVID-19 disinformation campaigns is “about creating distrust in the overall ecosystem and institutions. It’s not so much about picking a side as it is about creating confusion and doubt and distrust of authority.”

This isn't just about tax breaks. It's serious. People are dying and the economy is in recession over this epidemic. A healthy dose of skepticism would go a long way to damping down the corrosive effects of this attack on our people.

"We're all in this together" is a lie used to create servility and keep people distracted and dependent on "government solutions".

Lies like this are, from a marketing perspective, very successful, since the sheep can easily pick it up and repeat it ad nauseum.

got bitched at again, did you? too funny that. Every time you complain about TYRANNT!!! I have this image of a convenience store clerk aggravated and snapping at the old guy who keeps fucking up and hazarding others because he can't follow the simplest of requests to stay away from others.

Well, in fact, we aren't all in this together. Some die. We are in this with you, Roy, not that we chose you or anything.

Pandemic Propaganda Is Coming. Be Ready for It.
Americans will have to choose what to believe in a swelling sea of disinformation.

Russia, China and activists will use the infodemic as a weapon

Let’s be honest. We are heading into an election marked by a flood of disinformation about voting procedures, science and health care, the economy, foreign policy and the moral fabric of our society. We are likely to see conspiracy theories and false narratives from state actors such as Russia and China, news outlets and advocacy groups, and individuals ranging from partisan activists to white supremacists, and even our friends and neighbors who may inadvertently share conspiracy theories without malicious intent. Already, the infodemic has created misleading content that may have a grain of truth when it comes to testing, prevention and origins of the disease.

Covid-19, here we come: It’s time to prepare

There are many things that we as citizens, governments, technologists and civil society can do now to prepare for November. First, let’s recognize that we as American citizens have both power and responsibility. We need to do our homework about voting procedures, candidates and issues that matter to us, and turn out to vote. Let’s take the time to think critically about the veracity and sources of information we consume, and take care not to inadvertently spread misinformation.

So.. Is this the beginning of the next four years of "russia did it"? Lmao. First emails, then hacking, then buying ads, then ddosing, now more propaganda. Gearing up to blame the next loss on them too.

Btw, wtf would russia work so hard to control the narrative? More likely chinese are making these posts.

Rob is a misanthrope and hasn't washed his monkey suit in years. I've often cautioned him that he would get shot as a varmint and his head would end up over some hillbilly's fireplace. I've often envisioned Rob running through the hills in his monkey suit hunted by the community, like some ancient tribal miscreant who the broke taboos. :D

I have no idea why we are being flooded with misinformation on Coronavirus but I can see that we are. Others are quantifying the height of the bullshit and it's staggering how much crap is out there on this subject.

How Bad Is The COVID-19 Misinformation Epidemic?

Researchers cited in this article say about twice as many people say they are seeing false information about coronavirus on various internet sites compared to just four years ago for the entire presidential election.

A Pew Research Center survey conducted in the second week of March found that 48 percent of Americans reported seeing at least some made-up news about the outbreak.

only 8 percent of Americans both recalled seeing and believing a piece of fake news about the 2016 election.

“So, on average, double the rate of people recalled and believed in fake news in the COVID context compared to what we saw in 2016,”

We are being flooded with fake and misleading information at about double the volume four years ago. The droolings of Rob on this subject are a good example of what it does to some. But we all know that rob is succeptible to that shit before. What that article says is it's not clear the crap is changing minds. Most people reject it. Leaves one to wonder what all that effort is expected to achieve?

The one concerning part of this is your president is constantly backing the fake news and 40% of your population are following his lead. I do get some of the push back as the people that have actually lost jobs or are forced to work in front line jobs are truly scared shitless. We’ve seen what that can do to the thought process here with members calling for culling the herd to achieve herd immunity. The fake news that is being spread may have a purpose that the possible end game may be to create even more division with life and death consequences, in an already dangerously divided population.
