Crossing 2 Females of Different Strains

So I've been wondering, when crossing 2 females of different strains, does it matter which one is chosen to produce pollen and which one is pollinated?

Also, let's say we have 2 mother plants from different strains, plant A and plant B. If I pollinated a clone from A with B (crossing #1) and a clone from B with A (crossing #2), would all of the offspring count as one F1 group? And if I decided to cross a seed from #1 with a seed from #2, would those resulting offspring technically be an F2 and create the same kind of genetic variation expected in F2 seed batches, or would it be it's own F1 with the uniformity expected in F1's?
Logic tells me that it would just result in F2's and I might as well have just started out with a single crossing. But I can't be sure considering my limited knowledge.
