Hi. Can somebody say what optimal distance above canopy should be in veg and bloom? I'm running 4 cxa3070 AB 3000k and 1 cxa3070 AD 5000k powered ea by 1.75 amps. So total watts is 336. I run it for 100% power without lens.
SupraSPL this lens fit to cxa3070 ? And how to calculate PPFD, umols? Can you teach me? I read info that you posting but it's hard to understand for me because English is not my mother language. I'm interesting in running diy cob led that can easily replace 600w of hps(or bigger) in 4x4 foot grow tent. So how many cree cobs should I run for 4x4 tent? 9 cxa3070 cobs running by 1.75 ea will be good?

Ps: sorry for English.

Lookin good dude! Does a higher temp (5000k, 6500k) stop stretching over a the lower temps (3000k, 3500k)? I had this straight a while ago but I was talking to my friend about those 3590 6500k DD bin and confused myself. More blue = less stretch?
KNNA recommended 25-30% blue in veg. That corresponds to about 5000K. However, @Doer and others proposed that it is more about intensity than color temp. In other words if you are running low intensity you may need the extra blue but at higher intensity you may be able to use a lower color temp and still control temp.

I use 5000K at 200-350 PPFD and it is a good one size fits all for veg. I tend to avoid super bushy indica doms though.

Ya I was stoked to find out you can reuse it indefinitely and it handles the stankiest with no problem, including trimming stank. So I have been reusing the same carbon for 3-4 years, changing it out every ~6 months. A pair of DIY scrubbers with ~1.25" thick carbon layer, just added a third for a new 4X8.

To recharge it I put it in a stainless kettle and let sit next to or on the campfire to drive most of the moisture, then hit it with the torch to drive off more VOCs. The smell that comes off it when you torch it is very strong and sticks to your clothes and skin, may want to wear a mask if you try it. Smells like a magic marker chemical type smell. If you microwave it or bake it indoors you might have a mutiny and or mutation situation.
NIFTY! I have two 1.75m carbon filters and I was not looking forward to buying a third...

So; use a torch, do it outside... any tips to getting the carbon out of the filter and then back in afterwards?

Unfortunately I can't speak on that part because my filters are set up differently, the carbon is resting on the lid with the fan inside the tote, blowing out a duct in the side of the tote. The top one is using a 334 CFM Max Fan 6" (60/70/80W) and the bottom is a 710 CFM Hyper Fan 8" normally running at 50W

Going to test a more compact design for a new 4X8, a $4 tote from Walmart with a max fan 6" inside

The coverage, spacing and heatsink requirements would depend on how hard you run them and how much intensity you want in the canopy. I would suggest check out the heatsink thread (I will put in my sig) For growth I would recommend 5000K although it may depend on what style plants you tend to grow (stretchy or bushy)

Is that 954 for 954rr fireblade?

@Quintrix
Nice setup, I will put the heatsink specs into the spreadsheet and post it on the heatsinks thread

You can apply TIM with a brush or dab it, will work great either way.
hello SupraSPL

response of your question "Is that 954 for 954rr fireblade?"
exactly ^^ because video I saw on youtube of the power of this bike ^^

by cons I have not seen why using some degree of lens 90
it is increased to the flow of light in all directions or concentrated toward the center depth

thank's you for your response ;)

An amazing bike, very raw power delivery and allegedly 430 LBS wet, lighter than the newer liter bikes but I have not weighed one myself.

COBs call themselves 115 degree because that is where a large portion of their output is concentrated but in practice they shine light almost 180 degrees. It is amazing how much PPFD increases when adding a lens or reflector. In my case it is especially helpful because I have a walkway on three sides of the canopy.

I got lenses at first because I wanted to protect the LES from damage or contamination. The more I think about just what you've mentioned here, the more I think it will make a positive difference in PPfd delivered to the canopy...

Without lenses, the light would scatter sideways a lot more and with longer distances to the canopy, the inverse square law means it ends up uselessly weak.

The lenses still allow for plenty of side light and penetration, but they keep the beam tighter so photons don't stray off into costly oblivion.

hi SupraSPL

Ok I will suddenly understands it is better to put the lenses

for lenses it is this : http://fr.aliexpress.com/store/product/50mm-90-Degree-LED-Lens-Bracket-Reflector-for-High-Power-LED-20W-30W-50W-100W/204912_32297327712.html

I can not find it -> active cooled heatsink 3.5"X36" heatsink
did you direct links to buy this?
and for that one too -> 1.8"X44" heatsink

I always hesitate between these two configuration @64% or @ 56.3%

I wonder if I make two panel of 4 cxb3590 on one driver HLG-185H-C700 would be the best to make two panel 4 cxb3590 panel on two HLG-185H-C1400

What you recommend me for my area dark room Wide150 (150X90X200)

thank's U so much

About how thick do you think that layer of carbon is? How long does it last?

have you plugged your hyper fan into a kill a watt to confirm the dissipation? I was very surprised that my 8" draws 101w , even though the box says 75w max.

@yoda954

I think 56% is a very "reasonable" goal for a 2015 build and very impressive efficiency. 64% is great those that are directly heat limited, money to burn, solar powered, hawaii, super stealth etc.

The heatsinks I recommended are from heatsinkusa.com. If you are in EU you might be able to find better prices on that continent. If the heatsink cost is very high, CPU coolers might be the best option.

For your space I would recommend at least 400W @ 56% (675 PPFD averaged) . You could cram 600W in there (1000 PPFD) if you have the ability to keep them fed and canopy cooled.

I have tried 5-6.5 LBS (fully dried weight) per filter but did not record the thickness of the layer. Currently using 5 LBS and the layer is only 1". I never really pushed the envelope to see how long it will last but I change it out every 6 months. Once it gets old I can smell that chemical smell if I put my nose right in the duct but it does not smell like dank. I take that as a warning to change it out.

I measured the wattage with a power meter and recorded the wattage on the knob. Mine draws 80W max, very surprising that yours is 100W. Maybe I will double check the current draw with the Fluke. What power meter did you use?

ok
It's good
I will do that

then I would take 3 heatsink, I'll cut to 80 cm length ;)
100cm X 10cm X 1,5cm or 100cm X 35cm X 1.6cm
8 cxb3590 to started and will take 4 to make one more after
6 arpic cooling
12 lenses
and 3 HLG-185H-C1400B

I'll put the three panels in the direction of the width of the box and if I put 2 that I will put in the lengthwise...

I put the lenses that I put these three panels and without it I put only 2 I think it would be best to divide the light
or so I have to find small reflector which would be cool

If you have an idea for reflectors for cxb I'm interested ^^
I say thank you for everything really

I can sell my expensive HPS and my Chinese LED panels XMAX 6 v2 horticoled.com
price 1000 euro -> 1 073,46 USD
which cost me an arm and for AC consomation
I would say in a week the result of my weighed my skunk # 1

I knew nothing about LED
and I discovered that with little we can do a lot
a lot of marketing in LED that noob like me are what have easely by the selling point LOL

have a good day ;)

No shit.... is this carbon from the aquarium aisle or out of an old filter? My presh filter is ready to be put out! I have a GG filter waiting to be used but it doesn't fit in my cab, may try this.... thanks dude!

I tried aquarium carbon early on and it does work but I apparently it is best for water filtration so I switched to air phase coconut shell carbon. The aquarium carbon was more square chunk shapes and the air phase was more like thin chips.

I can see you have sealed the lid around the edges with tape, so have you just drilled a bunch of holes in the top of the lid for air flow? Do you have any mesh or fabric under the carbon?

This is so simple and cheap, imma copy :)

Yep I have a couple containers of the aqua-carbon and it is very big.. used it for a couple diy MINI filters.

You order the air phase online or can you find it [for something other than what we want it for ;)] locally? I have plenty of window screen I could use if that would suffice.. Hope you're doing well brother.
