Do you get what you pay for? Regualr or Feminized seeds?

I wonder...

I've noticed at gas stations sometimes there is only 2 storage tanks but 3 grades of fuel. I found out that many times they just sell the high test for the mid test price because not that many people buy mid grade anyways & your giving them better than they pay for. This makes a lot of sense to me. Tanks are expensive & maintenance of digging them up every few years etc.

Now I notice you can order regular & feminized seeds of the same strain from the same breeder. Now for them to have regular seeds they would have to have separate rooms of the males, plus rooms for propagation & a very real chance of getting the pollen in places you don't want it. To do this involved more money & time.

And all this extra cost, space & time just to have seeds that sell for less than the feminized seeds.

From a business point of view this makes no sense as most people (not including the odd hard core breeder) buy regular seeds for the cost.

There appears to be tons of money in seeds. when 6 seeds sell for $100 & you can get hundreds if not thousands of seeds off a plant. That's a lot of money. So selling feminized seeds for regular seed prices to the 5% that order regular seeds make far more sense than the alternative of keeping them all separate & whatnot.

I have purchased regular seeds a few time & feminizes seeds. In the past 5 years I have not seen 2 male plants & I always grow from seed. I don't even know HOW to clone.

Make me wonder....

The reason for 2 storage tanks and 3 grades.. is that if you look at the octane, the mid-grade is exactly down the middle... so 1 tank of low octane, 1 tank of high octane... pumped into a car gas tank 50%/50% = mid-grade. That said, feminized seeds to me.. are not worth the potential headache, I'd rather not ever risk destroying a potentially awesome pheno I ran across with some (potentially small, yet still there) hermie trait. I'd rather do it the hard way, and see just what I can do without having previous genetics destroy my testing/project.

Considering "breeding" these days is taking 20 or so clone only strains, then putting a male in the room with them, seeding them all up, collecting the seeds and slapping a name on their "new" strain.... I would say feminizing seeds is much much much more work....

In one cycle you just created 20 "new" strains.....

Each has their pros and cons.

Feminized
pros
-Female
-If done properly, genetics can be somewhat consistent
Cons
-If hermaphroditic traits were present already, they can be more susceptible to hermies

Regular
Pros
-More phenotypic variations
-slight price advantage from some breeders
Cons
-Waste soil/nutrients/time/space/light finding out gender
-Can still hermaphrodite

Are you sure you know how seeds, and feminized seeds are made?

Seeds = female plant + male pollen
Feminized Seeds = colloidal silver + seeds

So yeah, there are going to be males no matter what - I would think they pollinate in separate rooms or maybe even off site.

Which is why... to me, feminized seeds are a good joke. Price / comparison-wise - clone wins over feminized seed hands-down for populating a room, and if you have no/minimal stress.. you're guaranteed just that.. a clone of ole' mother. :D

I've popped roughly 20 feminized seeds and all of them were 100% female.

My ratio has been about 50/50 male/female so far with regular seeds.

So whether I spend 100 dollars on 10 regular seeds or 6 feminized seeds, I get about the same amount of females per pack.

Fem seeds have done us breeders/ growers a big favour.

5 years ago I was totaly against them, but as technoligy as been pushed forward so as the seeds.

Dutch passion fem seeds have the worste rep for any fem seed company, and most that use the same technique.

CS as shown to be by far the most useable.

What this as done for collectors of clones is awsome and also a collector of elite genetics.

That siad I will allways have basic reg seed in my fridge just incase some Monsanto like gene starts showing on these fems in a few generations

Clones are not easy for everyone to come by.
I have never had a hermie from fem seeds, and nobody can stress a plant like me.
Feminized seeds are not a joke, a lot of people do not have room to grow 10 plants to get 3-5 keepers. When you find a strain or pheno you like, you can clone a plant
from feminized seed just like a regular seed.
Order from good breeders and you will not have a problem with fem seed plants turning hermie.

a lot of people flat out refuse to grow regs. given the choice, i prefer regs for breeding and potential hybrid vigor. many seem to think that regs are better than fems. i haven't done any comparisons to have a solid opinion one way or the other, but in general prefer doing things the natural way.

so far though, i've tried a few really great fems, and will get them instead of regs especially when a strain is $100+. for that same $100, i could test 10 or more different fems.

they're in the market because some people want them, if only for the convenience. sexing does get in the way of SCROGging in particular as you have to sex and revert if you want to fill your screen up
