The BrahMos flies at over three times the speed of sound. There aren’t any fighter planes in active service anywhere in the world that can fly that fast. So catching the BrahMos in flight is nearly impossible. This speed also gives it the lots of kinetic energy to obliterate the target. Doesn’t matter if it’s a concrete bunker or a navy ship, if the BrahMos has been launched, it's bye-bye enemy.
The missile can be launched in a number of ways. It can be launched from land when mounted on trucks, from navy ships, and an air launched version is also in the works. The Indian Air Force is expected to equip 40 Sukhoi-30MKi air dominance fighters with the latter. The BrahMos can either be launched vertically or in the conventional combat firing mode. It has already proved its underwater launch capability, so it’s quite likely that India’s future submarines will be equipped with it too. It has pierced target ships at just above the water line when fired in the sea skimming mode, making it the only sea skimming supersonic missile in the world.

During one of the tests, the missile was able to discern between a group of buildings in an urban environment and hit the designated target. Also, it’s the only missile in the world that can maneuver at supersonic speeds. The Block-III missile dived on the target from the top, while travelling at Mach 2.8. This steep diving capability lets the Army target the enemy hiding behind geographical features like hills where traditional artillery fire may not be able to reach. In most tests, it has flown more than 290 km to hit targets no bigger than 5 meters in size. That’s like making a sniper shot.

This is why USA did not have many ships close to the strait of homuz worried that Iran might have this on shore lines compliments of Russia

So it went through a brick wall target plate,...how thick, don`t look too thick at all, and a 3" Russian Corvette hull, but I can tell you this with surety, it will not enter a Battleship armor, and will not Bunker Bust. At 129 min in the video, you can see it shoot the round out. The SS speed is to get the rocket there without any issues.

It will not do this to a 26" IJN BB plate,

PJ-10 is an awesome weapon, it will kill 90% of us Navy ships today, but it will not Bunker Bust into the ground or penetrate Ford honeycomb or Iowa Armor.....period.......

That`s why the Nimitz class went into the Strait of Hormuz, ..it`s honeycomb is tough to breach.
The Strait of Hormuz, between the shores of Iran and the United Arab Emirates, is one of the world's most strategically important choke points. About 20 percent of the world's oil supply travels through the strait.

The U.S. Navy was not sending warships to accompany the U.S. and British-flagged ships. Rather, they used U.S. Military Sealift Command ships or contract ships.

But military officials said U.S. Navy warships are positioned nearby and are ready to respond if needed. they were not even close to it :) they stayed out of the missile range


Let us consider a scenario in which a Burke class destroyer escorting a carrier battle group (CBG) is faced with a swarm of 8 BrahMos/Yakhont Anti-Ship missiles. Once the missiles are detected by the AWACS at 150+ km from the ship, the usual procedure would be to direct fighter jets from a nearby carrier towards the missile to shoot it down. But in this case, the missile is traveling at 3 times the speed of sound. Fighter jets will have 1/3 the time to react when compared to facing subsonic missiles. Hence the chances of a successful shoot down by fighters is less. But if we consider a solitary destroyer acting on its own, then the BrahMos will be detected at about 25-30 km from the ship. Considering a salvo of 8 BrahMos and that the missile travels at 1km/sec, the Burke has about 25-30 seconds to react. Launching long range missiles would be futile at this point because the missiles are closing in on the ship fast. The Medium range option available on the Burke is the 50 km range Evolved Sea Sparrow Missile (ESSM) which is quad packed and hence large quantities are available. This is very useful as one cell packs 4 MR-SAM compared to 1 LR-SAM. While intercepting supersonic anti-ship missiles, a large number of SAMs are fired to ensure successful interception. So in this case, we can consider about 16-24 ESSM ripple fired from the Burke towards the incoming missiles. We have 4 SAMs targeting each BrahMos missile and the probability of interception is ‘theoretically’ 100%. Practically, the BrahMos may break through these defenses.

But there’s a big flaw in this if you haven’t noticed. Firing 24 ESSM takes 24 seconds, 4 ESSM target 1 BrahMos, so 24 of these can target 6 BrahMos and by that time the last few ESSM have been fired, there are still 2 BrahMos missiles left untargeted and speeding towards the Burke. So what’s the flaw? Think ……….If 16 BrahMos missiles (the capacity of new gen Russian frigates and Indian destroyers) were fired instead of 8, the defense of the Burke would be saturated if it’s operating alone. The Phalanx CIWS and Softkill countermeasures would probably manage to counter 2 more BrahMos, but then you have 6 remaining supersonic anti-ship missiles with 300 kg semi-armor piercing warheads ramming at full speed into a 9000 ton destroyer. Hence we can assume the saturation limit for a single Burke stands at 12 BrahMos missiles. So if it goes one on one with a Russian frigate or Indian destroyer carrying 16 BrahMos, it’s not returning home.


So what did we learn from this? We learnt that if a ship possesses purely medium range SAM systems, its chances of survival are very low in a modern conflict. If it faces a missile like BrahMos, its chances reduced threefold. Hence many navies are opting for a layered defense system with AEW systems to protect their expensive warships. But there will be another doubt in your mind once you’ve read this. You’ll wonder how the AEGIS, which is the best in the world can’t deal with 20-30 missiles like BrahMos, and is the US Navy leaving its ships vulnerable to threats like these. The answer is yes and no. YES, The AEGIS is the best in the world because it can combine data from every ship and aircraft radar in the fleet ad draw a big picture of the surrounding airspace. It gets early data from E-2 aircraft which enables it to intercept missiles 100+ km from the fleet. And NO because even the worlds most advanced anti-missile system has a saturation limit. The exact value is not disclosed for obvious reasons, but considering a CBG will have 3 AEGIS equipped escorts in wartime, 48 fighters with 8 on Combat Air Patrol (CAP)and 2 E-2s will be airborne for providing Over The Horizon (OTH) radar coverage, the saturation limit for this CBG will be around 64 BrahMos missiles. The 300 km range of the BrahMos in mixed altitude flight and 120 km range in low altitude flight means that it cannot be fired from beyond the radar coverage of the CBG. Hence the deadliest delivery platform will be Russian Yasen subs which carry 32 Yakhont/BrahMos and can fire them while submerged. Now that we dealt with BrahMos against the famous AEGIS equipped Burke, let us see how other anti-missile systems fare against it.

So if you’re a warship captain, it’s always safer to be on the side which has BrahMos/Yakhont than to be on the side which has to face the BrahMos. By your bad luck if you end up facing the BrahMos, prayer is another option.

India has signalled its intent to strike enemy targets with devastating force early on in a conflict.

In September 2010 India’s newly constituted tri-services Strategic Forces Command (SFC) submitted a proposal to the Defence Ministry for setting up two dedicated squadrons of aircraft comprising 40 Su-30MKI air dominance fighters. The task of this “mini air force” is to deliver nuclear weapons.

The picture became clearer in October 2012 when the Cabinet Committee on Security green lighted a programme to carry out structural and software modifications on 42 Su-30MKIs and acquire 216 air-launched BrahMos missiles. Until then, the BrahMos – the product of an India-Russia joint venture – was for exclusive use by the Navy.

In March 2015 the SFC received the first of these 42 Sukhois equipped with the air launched version of the supersonic BrahMos. This is the first time that the SFC, which at present depends on the Indian Air Force (IAF) for delivering nuclear weapons under its command, is acquiring its own aerial assets.

Currently, India’s nuclear delivery system is based on land-based ballistic missiles such as the Agni and Prithvi plus the IAF’s nuclear-capable Mirage 2000, Su-30 MKI and Jaguar fighter-bombers. The final element of the nuclear triad, submarine-launched missiles, is still being tested.

Individually, the Su-30 and BrahMos are powerful weapons. But when the world’s most capable fourth generation fighter is armed with a uniquely destructive cruise missile, together they are a dramatic force multiplier.

The BrahMos’ 3600 km per hour speed – literally faster than a bullet – means it hits the target with a huge amount of kinetic energy. In tests, the BrahMos has often cut warships in half and reduced ground targets to smithereens. The Sukhoi’s blistering speed will add extra launch momentum to the missile, plus the aircraft’s ability to penetrate hardened air defences means there is a greater chance for the pilot to deliver the missile on to its designated targets.

Lincoln went in all the way very close to the Iranian shore, she stayed in there all week daring anyone with half a nut sack to try anything,....guess what,....nothing happened to her. Should she go in during a war, you don`t wanna see how she and her sisters will open and keep open the door.

I debunked PL10 as nothing more than a rocket with speed. It has a 300lb lifting capacity, it is a good weapon, but nothing in the way of deterring the US Navy for acting or dispatching. It a fire and forget weapon because you need to know where the target is first. It can not loiter like the BGM-109 and take alternate programming in flight. It is short range and packs a medium to small punch.

I also went toe to toe with Zumwalt designers with some friends on a website and not only did we hole their plan, but Zumwalt went from 27 ships to three ordered.

Brah was replaced by the Chinese/Russian SS-N-27B Sizzler. Both are built off the original Russian rocket. Both MUST use scanning that will give it away, or RADAR that you better not turn on.

Brah is not an impact weapon, it fires a round after delivering it at high speed to location,

I`ll leave you with this Darth, Brah is now considered a land attack cruise missile, it is not a Blue Water threat as it was once designed for.
