so i got my hair cut today and as usual it sent me back to thinking hey, why don't i do dreadlocks? i know they take a while to grow in properly but i don't know much else.

who has them on here, who likes them who loathes them and who thinks what else?

NB: i'm white and a mother...but i'll be a uni student for the next 3-4 years regardless...

thoughts?

Half my family has dreads.

They tried to convert me, but I said hell no. I like combing my hair, and braiding it, and wearing bangs,
or wearing it in a fro.

I think they're cool, if you take care of them. My aunt had some lovely
dreads, but cut them off maybe a year ago because the weight of them was ripping
the front edges of her hair off. :o

She did have them for like 12 years though.

I think if you want, you should go for it.

But you already know because you're white, its going to be
harder for them to "lock" in.

If you have straight hair, get a curly perm. Maybe that will help
them lock better and quicker.

Just do it. If you dont like it you can always cut them with no regrets. If you dont get them you will always wonder what if... Had mine for 4 yrs and love em

Currently working on em again - but this time I'm just letting them come in on their own. It has been like 6 months and I prolly have like 15 legit ones, but I really like the way they are locked over when I had someone do them.

Since you're in school, you can probably pull it off, but if you want to be seen as a professional it wouldn't work.

Why are you asking people on the net anyway?

thanks for all the replies guys, although i'm not much closer to deciding...gotta agree wih louis541 though i'll definitely need to get rid of them before i try to get into proper work.
but if i don't do them now it might be inappropriate for the rest of my life.

i'm asking you guys cause it's pretty much judgement-free, you don't know what i look like so it's not one of those trying-to-picture-it things, just theoretical. and i figured there are a lot more people on here who have dreads or know people with them than the handful of people i know in person.

decisions decisions....

My wife and I (Caucasians) Listen to mainly Reggae ( I prefer roots reggae) and try and follow what the lyrics are saying. We are not Rastafarian, but we follow One Love, and I and I . Anyways, my wife twisted up hair and asked what I think (looked like dreads) and I was so turned on! Long story short, try it.

dreads look cool, but i am a guy that loves to run my fingers through my wife's hair, i love that, it is a real turn on for me...she had her hair dreaded before, it looked very cool, looked sexy even, but man i could not touch her hair, let alone cradle her head and run my fingers through her hair, although the look was great they just weren't practical imho hehe

if you just chill and free yourself of other peoples short hair mentality youll find long hair is great, feels cool low maintanence. people with short hair never got past that point in their lives, either they are afraid of how they look/ how people see them or they just couldnt grow it past that point and they dont know what it is to have it. either way you dont want to wear that, if you can have hair you may not want to live under their personality faults/ or bad/company attitudes. with that said dreads can be conscience or you could fall asleep on the couch for 3 years... i like mine thinner and neater. just let it happen dont pour beeswax on your dome or anything

I LOVE dreads on females! I am "white" too and it was hard for my hair to dread, but that's because of my oily Italian heritage. I say do it! But it is ultimately up to you, and dreads are a lot more work than you imagine ;)

I personally think dreads look better on girls with dark hair. I saw some girl at a party I went to years ago; she had orange skin and super blonde dreads and it looked terrible.

I say you go for it! You'll never know if you like it if you never try it.
