Fascism and the Republican Party

Biden said it out loud in a speech a few days ago. We all knew it before he said it but to have the President of the United States come out and say it. That's different. Let the light of truth purify us.

President Biden called on Democrats Thursday "to vote to literally save democracy once again" - and compared Republican ideology to "semi-fascism" - as he led a kickoff rally and a fundraiser in Maryland 75 days out from the midterm elections.

Addressing an overflow crowd of thousands at Richard Montgomery High School in Rockville, Mr. Biden said, "Your right to choose is on the ballot this year. The Social Security you paid for from the time you had a job is on the ballot. The safety of your kids from gun violence is on the ballot, and it's not hyperbole - the very survival of our planet is on the ballot."

"You have to choose," Mr. Biden added. "Will we be a country that moves forward or a country that moves backward?"

Mr. Biden on Thursday expanded on his effort to paint Republicans as the "ultra-MAGA" party - a reference to former President Donald Trump's "Make America Great Again" campaign slogan - opposing his agenda and embracing conservative ideological proposals as well as Trump's false claims about the 2020 election.

"What we're seeing now is either the beginning or the death knell of an extreme MAGA philosophy," Mr. Biden told donors at the fundraiser. "It's not just Trump, it's the entire philosophy that underpins the - I'm going to say something, it's like semi-fascism."

"I respect conservative Republicans," Mr. Biden said later. "I don't respect these MAGA Republicans."

That's it, folks. He said what we all knew. The MAGA Republican Party has turned away from democracy and toward the violent, backward, authoritarian autocratic ideology of Hitler and Mussolini.

We know this from what Trump read with great interest.

Trump’s Ex-Wife Says He Kept Hitler’s Book of Speeches by Bedside
Donald Trump’s ex-wife in an interview in 1990 said that Trump kept a book of Hitler’s speeches by his bed side.

United States Presidential candidate for 2016, Donald Trump used to sleep with a book of Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler’s speeches by his bedside, his former wife Ivana Trump had said in an interview with Vanity Fair in 1990.

A report by Business Insider, cites an excerpt from the interview where Ivana tells her lawyer Michael Kennedy that Trump reads a book of Hitler’s collected speeches, My New Order and keeps it in a cabinet by his bed.

fascist movements include: nationalism (including racial nationalism), hierarchy and elitism, militarism, masculinity, and quasi-religion. Other aspects of fascism such as its "myth of decadence", anti-egalitarianism and totalitarianism can be seen to originate from these ideas.

There are plenty of examples within the Republican Party and their supporters. And some people who post here fit the bill too.

Aug 26 (Reuters) - The actions of some Republicans allied to former President Donald Trump fit the definition of fascism, White House spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters on Friday, a day after President Joe Biden said they edged toward "semi-fascism."

“I was very clear when laying out and defining what MAGA Republicans have done and you look at the definition of fascism and you think about what they're doing in attacking our democracy. ... That is what that is. It is very clear," Jean-Pierre told a press briefing.

MAGA refers to Trump's "Make America Great Again" slogan. Fascism is a political philosophy that exalts nation and often race above the individual and supports an autocratic government led by a dictatorial leader involving the forced suppression of opposition, U.S. dictionary Merriam-Webster says.

In response to Ms Jean-Pierre's clear and accurate characterization of Maga as a fascist ideology, The RNC responded with classic Nazi-like propaganda:

In response to Biden's Thursday evening comments that Trump-allied Republicans embraced violence and hatred, and edged toward "semi-fascism," the Republican National Committee called the remarks "despicable."

"Biden forced Americans out of their jobs, transferred money from working families to Harvard lawyers, and sent our country into a recession while families can't afford gas and groceries," spokesperson Nathan Brand said.

This despite the fact there is no recession right now in the US, unemployment rate is down and all the good legislation that has passed through Congress helps working families. I guess he's just angry that rich people didn't get another tax cut because Biden used windfall money to cut the deficit. But propaganda is what it is. lies, distortions and half truths. That, in essence is all MAGA has.

The current slogan is even more nakedly fascist.

This nonsense does not deserve debate.

Terrorism is a tool of fascists. Not all terrorists are fascists. All fascists MAGA GOP are terrorists.

Trumpism is fascism, American-style | John L. Micek
The Jan. 6 committee is laying out the evidence. We can’t ignore it any longer

If you want to know what the slide into fascism looks like, go back and review Tuesday’s session of the U.S. House committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection at the U.S. Capitol.

It was a tragic parade of public servants relaying the vile acts of harassment they were subjected to as they did the hard work of making sure the wheels of American democracy turned smoothly during the 2020 election.

There was Georgia election worker Wandrea “Shaye” Moss, who, along with her mother, Ruby Freeman, were harassed by Trump supporters after the former president publicly falsely accused them of engaging in voter fraud.

In one instance, Trump supporters even broke into Moss’ grandmother’s home, looking to make a “citizen’s arrest,” Capital-Star Washington Reporter Jacob Fischler wrote Tuesday.

Freeman said the FBI told her that she had to leave her home for her own safety and stayed away for two months to escape the danger, she told the committee in taped testimony.

“It was horrible,” she said.

And you don’t have to agree with – or even like – Pennsylvania House Speaker Bryan Cutler to be repulsed by the same harassment he and his family were subjected to by Trump loyalists and their enablers.

Cutler, of Lancaster County, the top Republican in the state House, revealed that he was bombarded by near-daily calls from Trump lawyers Rudy Giuliani and Jenna Ellis, as they sought his support in illegally toppling the results of the 2020 presidential election.

The calls from Giuliani and Ellis, now an adviser to Pennsylvania Republican gubernatorial nominee Doug Mastriano, persisted even after Cutler, who described the outreach as “inappropriate,” asked them to stop.

“I understand that you don’t want to talk to me now,” Giuliani said in another message. “I just want to bring some facts to your attention and talk to you as a fellow Republican.”

Cutler also discussed the impact that Trump supporter Steve Bannon’s calls for protests outside Cutler’s home and district office had on him and his family. In one instance, Cutler’s 15-year-old son was home alone as protesters massed outside, according to the Washington Post.

In newly released footage, Cutler said he was forced to “disconnect [his] home phone for about three days,” after his personal information was shared online. Cutler said his phone “would ring all hours of the night and fill up with messages,” as the Capital-Star’s Marley Parish reported Tuesday.

Why do people carrying Nazi flags keep showing up at Trump's and DeSantis's rallies?
someone kicked the troll nest!

It's time to stop pussyfooting around and call MAGA GOP leaders and supporters what they truly are, a fascist group. That's the message Biden gave. Fascism is anti democratic. It is an ideology that as a central tenet believes that only a strong leader with absolute authority can lead and protect the people of a nation. Absolutist authoritarianism is also central to MAGA GOP ideology. It fails over time but small minded fearful people cling to it. It's simple. Simple, easily understood, clearly communicated and wrong.

I thoroughly concur. The Reichstag fire, minus follow-on context, was not a big deal.

This was a solid go at the Vierte Reich.
