FFOF ( Fox Farms Ocean Forest ) made Simple - Autoflower

This thread was created to help those who seem to overthink the ease of use of this highly ammended bag soil. I see many growers both new and experienced seem to post “ issues “ when trying to run this medium.

I am merely showing a simple no frills method of container / bag grows for autos. Since feeding requirements will be for average 90 ( + or - ) day average for autoflower growth , this will fit it perfectly.

No multi bottle nonsense ... No special water requirements ( use tap ) ... No boosters

FFOF is one of the most complete “ off the shelf “ bagged medium one can by ..... ready to use alone.
Other growers I talked with , mentioned regional differences among stock.

Ingredients: Composted forest humus, sphagnum peat moss, Pacific Northwest sea-going fish emulsion, crab meal, shrimp meal, earthworm castings, sandy loam, perlite, bat guano, granite dust, Norwegian kelp, and oyster shell (for pH adjustment).

Medium is prebuffered to 6.3 .

ED4279B6-D1AC-430A-A686-0BD45B257761.jpeg

I will list 2 versions of soil setup .......

1. Plain FFOF soil run only
2. Pelletized dry nute ammended ( self feed )

Begin with the final container size you wish to run ...... I run 1 gallon SOG bags and 3/5 gallon plastic black or air pots ( air prune ). Smart bags will work also. You will be planting directly to pot. You can also grow a seedling in a solo with a seed starter mix and plant as plug into this medium too. But for this , I will show you that FFOF is not quite as hot to seedlings as some report.

You will NOT be feeding the seedling at all with outside Nutes. It will feed on its own from the medium only and will acclimate “ faster and easier “ than dropping more Nutes on top of this charged medium.

Water :

TAP
( whether allowed to vape off 24 hours or not ) it will work. No RO , distilled , holy water , unicorn sweat or other “ special “ water sources. Your ONLY REQUIREMENT is to PH correctly.
PH range for entire autoflower run : 6.3 to 6.5 ( No more No less ) .

Soil is pretty aerated on its own but works much better with added perlite. I tend to shoot for 25% minimum more by volume of medium used.

I am using a simple 1 gallon grow bag for a SOG grow of 9 plants for a tent I am running. However adjust your volume of perlite to container size you choose.

Your mix should resemble something like this ....

155AA730-FF70-4D3B-B8DA-1A97E72E534A.jpeg

This bag is half filled AND HERE IS WHERE YOU CAN RUN TWO DIFFERENT VARIATIONS.

1. Fill remainder with same mix .
2. Add a tablespoon of Dry Fertilizer ( Dr. Earth 5-5-5 or megacrop 1 tsp ).

When running FFOF solo .... I merely MIST this half fill with water to hydrate it , then cover fill to top.

For Dry Ammend : I am using Dr. Earth LIFE fertilizer ( 5-5-5 ) or Megacrop
This method is similar to Canucks grow method using dry fertilizer and coco grows he does with autoflowers.

Note : I found Dr. Earth LIFE at the 99¢ ( half off ) in 1 gallon bags ! .... needless to say I grabbed a few .
Dr. Earth Fruit and Veg and Flower Girl are both good options also.

For some LED grows : CalMag “ may “ be needed occasionally and will only need be added 1tsp per gallon of water before use.

7FD12FAC-6FAD-431A-817B-BBBB6F78CE72.jpeg

FFOF by itself will carry an auto for weeks on its own ........ on water only. The pelletized feed will self charge and supplement myco as plant moves thru bloom. The alternate method is merely top dressing FFOF in those grows running bag FFOF only.

I do not flush or leach medium upon final weeks ..... I merely continue watering requirements.
NO FRILLS .

You will find the plants prefer feeding on its own terms instead of dumping a brew all over it .

Just keep your PH in range and you will see how well this bagged soil does.

Hope this helps. PEACE.

Nice post! So many people are using FFOF but I've never seen it laid out so clearly like this before.

Oh come on now. It can't be that simple. You need a dozen bottles, you need to test runoff pH and if it's not in range you have to flush and flush over and over again until the runoff pH is within range. Don't forget the silica! It's a must for any grow. You can't just plant in decent soil and let the plant grow. It won't do it. You have to fuss with your plants everyday. They can't be left alone and you need to feed at 2000 ppm to pump up those buds. Large doses of PK boosters are a requirement for growing dank. Good soil isn't enough. You have to pay through the nose for products with cool names and fancy labels. You have to bubble your water for a week to remove the chlorine or else the plants will stop growing and die. :bigjoint:

In all seriousness though, I had a couple plants in 1.5 gallon pots of Ocean Forest that were given nothing but water from the hose all summer. Other than a few yellowing leaves they grew just fine with nothing but Ocean Forest and are flowering right now.

It’s kind of like “ my version “ out of probably many others , but I wanted most growers not to read too much into this medium. It works very well on its own , that should speak well of its blend.

For regs , you can top dress the pelletized fert and water in or continue top dress for recharge.

I’ve been slowly pulling away from “ bottle Nutes “ for soil. And will only run them with Hempy.
I don’t get anywhere near as much purple stems or off balanced deficiencies.

Although silica actually does have some value in hardening a plant ( environment) , i just let them run and get done. I’m sure many will tweak the medium , but mostly it does well by itself.

Part 2 :

Here are some other variations I have tried and do not mind sharing. These were based on items I had on hand at the time , so I experimented. The results were excellent. I’m sure depending on your own blends it may work as well ( Kellogg’s / Black Magic / sunshine ) .

1. 75% FFOF / perlite - 25% HF Potting ( brown bag ) not strawberry fields.

2. 50% / 50% mix of FFOF / PERLITE / EB STONE 420 ( LOVE This soil )
EB Stone has humic , dolomite , coir and pumice. It rounds out the FFOF completely.
This is hands down my best blend over ANY supersoil. I use for breeding fems or moms.
But will work fantastically for auto grows. I highly recommend this version. EB is like FFOF “ mild “ and also keeps the same aerated consistency of medium.

AA7C473A-D2C3-47EE-88D1-BCF26221042C.jpeg

Mentioned above was silica ..... which can help in environment / grow area conditions with heat and plant health. It does provide cell strength , vigor and help fight PM and other fungal issues. And am sure one could mix in or simply spray ( Foliar ).

Another tip :
Yeast . Simple dry packet sprinkled on top of “ half filled “ container will promote better mycrobial activity and aids in composting. It helps build roots also. I used to pour a couple of beers on a compost pile of kitchen scraps and old harvests .

Happy gardening.

Great posts! Thanks much! Could I please get a clarification on the percentages here....

50% FFOF and Perlite mixed, with 50% EB?

33% of each?

50% FFOF, and 50% of EB and perlite mixed?

Sorry. I like to think I'm not flat out 'tupid, but I'm not catching what you're saying there.... Lol. Thx

It looks like you're doing something right. All the leaves pointing up tells me that plant is Happy! I just I started to amend some of mine with bio-char, black lava rock, pumice, rice hulls, EWC, vermicompost, Mykos, and Craft Blend from Build a Soil. I've had my FFOF for a little over a year now, but it's not fully FFOF anymore kinda.

Sorry i was in mid smoke sesh when proof reading.

Yes 50% / 50% of FFOF and EB stone 420.
Add appropriate perlite fill and mix. I like those aerated mixes ( peat ) for autos ... less compaction issues for roots.

Its not rocket science to me .... looking at the medium as the one doing MOST of the initial feeding made more sense in seeing how well it runs “ straight “ vs. ADDING liquid feeds to it. I am looking more into dry ferts ( vs. ) anymore liquid nutes. Storage / product separation in solution is an issue i hate ... sorry dynagro.

I dont cook soil anymore so looking into simple layering tricks seemed better for me.

I have a simple no till mix with FFOF and HF that is a simple mix and use soil recipe .... ( not my own ) but looks good for big container grows that utilizes Happy Frog fruit and veg dry fertilizer.

Mooshine mix .

I'm doing the No-Till thing now too, and am trying to get totally off the bottles. My goal is just to top dress when I need to. My second and third grow, I just planted straight into the old pots without doing anything, but adding some BAS Craft Blend, and still using some bottled nutes. My fourth grow has the mixed up amended soil. Round 3 is at 3 1/2 weeks flowering, and 4 is vegging. I've also started using rice hulls as a mulch, and my soil life is happier. Here's a pic from a month ago I took to show the rice hulls. It also adds silica.

Once again ! Good going! I hope people listen, especially new growers before they spend 50-100$ on a bunch of pretty liquid bottles.
YOU MENTIONED TOP DRESSING WITH FFOF.... I top dress like this also, I use a cup or so of amended soil sometimes to help... and it does ever so gently

10 days later KKP ....water only

Plants really growing now ... FIMMED 2 out of four and looking good ...stocky and all green.
Same tap water .... nothing else.

I am planning to revamp this thread with another “ layered “ mix version using those solo cupped KKP and Strawberry Diesel.
It will be a Megacrop ammended mix ( dry ) to the 2 part soil .... curious on how long that will feed .

My other plants ( GOJIBERRY ) have been on same medium mix ( one month ! ) on water only !
Pics later ( lights out )
