First timer: lighting question

Just lookin' to grow a plant or two, nothing serious. Just having fun with it. I'm going to grow with flourescents, and I read on a website, that I should figure about 75 watts per plant. Does it matter whether I use a flourescent bulb rather than a tube?
Thanks

A tube is also a flurescent bulb....

I think Benny's asking if he can use the traditional cylindrical fluoro tube or the small, coiled compact fluorescents (CF).

The answer is that you can use either, but CFs allow you to pack more light intensity in a smaller area than do the old long tubes.

An old wardrobe or small shipping crate lined with white plastic and loaded with 6-8 CFs in close proximity to the leaves and with good ventilation (air volume of cabinet changed every 5 min), should work OK.

Small small small time growers (onesy-twosy) need some good luck if growing from seed.... or a good mate who can supply clones. When you raise from seed, about 50% will be male. If you only have a micro grow space, you don't have room to raise many plants to assure you're getting some females.

Rotsa ruck.

My grow space isn't that small. It's not like a kitchen cabinet or something. It's in my closet. The space is probably 2'x2' and 5' tall area. If I get a compact flourescent 75watt bulb, do you think that would be enough just to start 1 plant?....

I'm growing just a seed that I pulled out of some nice headies that I got yesterday....so my hopes aren't that high. It would be nice if it was female though :blsmoke:

hi i am growing just one plant to and i am using a 30 watt cf flourescent bulb and a 40watt cf bulb do u guys think i have enough light

A single CPF bulb is not going to do you. Try hanging a pair of dual fixtures and you'll be able to veg nicely. I will never recommend flouros of any kind for flowering. Do not read the incandescent equivalent on your CPFs, use the actual wattage to calculate. A "127w" CPF is actually under 30w. Flouro tubes are very low intensity. A 4' tube is only 40w, and that's spread along the entire length, offering only about 10w/sq foot.

Sure, you can start one plant under a single CF, but be prepared to put about 4-5 x 18-20W CFs in there as the plant veges up, one on top and the rest around the midpoint of the plant height.

You will get some buds by flowering with the CFs but they will be small, fluffy, low density popcorny sorts. Get a small HPS security light for flowering from the hardware store if you want good bud density.

Sorry, but your 2 x 2 space is effectively a kitchen cabinet. You'll smoke all you can grow in such a small space faster than you can grow it. If you only had a walk-in closet, perhaps 4'x6' you'd stand a much better chance of getting out of the loop of buying weed.

You'll certainly be able to get one plant flowered in such a space, perhaps two if you use the old Sea-of-Green growers' tricks (remove all branching, flower the plants while still quite short).

Short plants work better with indoor lighting. A 250W HPS security light would give you some nice, tight buds on roughly 25-30" tall plants in an 8 week flowering cycle.

Get your mum plant going, sex it, then do a half-dozen cuttings if you've gotten a female. Flower up the 2 cuttings that do best, just as soon as they set root.

While you're flowering, you'll have to find a place to veg your mum. You might be able to veg in the lower half of the closet and flower in the upper half.

Your ventilation will be difficult; you're going to have to move air equal to the entire volume of the closet every 5 mins (AND will have to trap light from the veg area from getting to the flowering plants).

annnnd.... I suppose you want to keep this thing quiet enough so others in the house are not aware of it?

Rotsaruck.
