Indeed. Plus less cooling required as individual chips don't get as hot and may last longer.
Modern DIY quantum boards or strip panels fully cash in on that and don't require bulky heat sinks anymore just a plate or some cheap U-profile.

I wonder which chips can boast the best efficiency : hardware upfront cost - ratio?

any luxmeter will do as well (given you give your plants the same spectrum at the canopy top.) Quantummeters are mostly necessary to figure out the true PPFD values.

That's what I did. Life has been easier since then. Apogee MQ-500. It's amazing how powerful the new LED's are. Been running my lights waaaay to close!

Lux meter did shit all except help me balance out my canopy. It underrepresented par by a long shot using all available conversions.
