Here we grow... first one.

Just got my mmj approval yesterday and the seeds have germed for a couple days. Royal Flush is in soil for now on top of the cabinets and the soil is the Scotts hydro release. Supposedly it releases water to roots as it dries out. Here's the plan....

I have two cfl cabinets on their way. One 2' and one 3' - both come with hydroponic setups pre-configured. I am also ordering a 4'w by 2' deep by 5' high tent. DWC is the focus at this point due to yield and speed of cultivation. I am a bit leary due it being the first grow but I consider myself a relatively astute person. I have been researching for about three months now on what to do and how to do it but I am aware of my noobness and accept the fact that some pointers and direction are going to be needed.

More about the setup: I plan on using the 2'box for clones and sprouts until they are about 18" high. The 3' box will be for another 4 weeks of vedge with a FIM used every other week.

The big tent will be for flowering. I plan on another FIM the day they enter the tent and going to 12/12 light cycle after two weeks in the tent. Dunno what or if thats going to help cola development but thats why I'm posting for feed back....

I've been thinking about starting up my first grow as well.
Don't have any tips for you but I'm interested to see what comes of it

Hopefully have sprouts today. Anyone ever full spectrum cfl's. I think thats the way to go for a cheapskate like myself. Lol

lots of people use cfl, don't feel bad just upgrade later

Use 6500K for veg, 2700K for flower. If you're going to be cheap then don't be stupid.

CFL grows are for people hiding in cupboards.


If you're legal then wtf man, get a HPS and enjoy...

I guess no one really read the first post. The being a cheapskate remark was a joke. I will almost 2k in the whole setup once I am all done.

Thanks! The question about the cfl was more about its type. Full Spectrum or what else? I get the kelvin and lumens: but isnt the spectrum important too?

From my grow book...
Color Temperature: You might see a lot of different labels when shopping at the store for CFLs. Labels including Soft White, Warm White, Cool White, Bright White, Halogen White, Daylight White, Full Spectrum. And also labels like 2700K, 3000K, 3500K, 4000K, 5000K, 6400K, and 6500K. These are all the color temperature of the light you are using. This is a measure of how warm or cool the light given off by a lamp appears, with warmer colors having a yellowish tinge and cooler colors being close to a blue. What confuses some people is that the warmer a color is, the colder its color temperature is. (ex. Warm White = 2700K.) Bulbs ranging in the 2700K-3000K spectrum are usually labeled Warm White or Soft White, bulbs ranging in the 3500K – 4000K spectrum are bright white or cool white, 5000K is labeled Full Spectrum, and finally 6400K – 6500K is labeled Daylight. You can grow an entire crop with CFLs if you chose the right spectrum of bulbs. For Vegetation you will want to use 6500K or 5000K, and when you flower you will want to switch to 2700K or 3000K.

The reason being, throughout the year the plants outside receive more 6500K (blue) spectrum light because the days in summer are long and hot and as Autumn/Winter gets closer the day gets shorter, and thus, plants gradually receive less 6500K light and more 2700K light as the plants begin to initiate the process of flowering. Do what you can to avoid bulbs within that 3500K – 4000K because they emit very little light that Is useful to your plant. Take note of (in the above diagram) the difference between the varying color temperatures.

I do have a tent with hps/mh system coming too. I checked a bit ago and have one sprout thats broken the soil.... pretty stoked.

Two of the three breaking the soil. I know its probably poor form and a bit risky but I moved them into a perlite & soil starter mix with a plastic cover. Wetted the soil with distilled water and just a few drops of root propagation solution added to the one liter bottle. Still waiting on the cfl boxes to show for the "nursery". They are stored on top of the kitchen cabinets where it's a steady 75°.
