I literally can't get drunk anymore. Or even tipsy really. Just sick. Maybe it's a sign from my brain telling me to stop drinking... but all I want is to feel buzzed!! I really don't drink THAT much... I usually have a few glasses of wine at dinner maybe 3-4 nights a week. Doesn't make me feel anything other than a little more relaxed. I weigh 128 lbs, I'm 5'6" and very petite. I don't want to get DRUNK per say, but I can't even get that fun tipsy stupid feeling anymore. Last night, I drank a bottle of red wine and a Bud Platinum in a period of about 3 hours. Felt sick and went to bed. Didn't feel intoxicated at all... could have driven all over the place and maybe even walked a tightrope. Woke up, felt nauseous and bloated and slightly hung over. On my last birthday back in April, my friend kept buying me shot after shot after shot of Fireball after starting the night off with a monstrous shot of liquid heroin. I blacked out early on and do not remember a single thing... apparently I spent most of the night in the mud outside my apartment throwing up continuously and yelling at everyone not to touch me. Needless to say I don't want to get to that point...

It makes me sad... I miss being 18 and feeling good off a couple PBR's lol. Is it possible that medication can do this to someone? I'm taking Zoloft and Wellbutrin and have wondered if somehow these give me a higher tolerance. Google didn't find anything tho. Other than drink on an empty stomach or stop drinking entirely, is there anything I can do to lower my tolerance or something?? :|

switch to hard liquor you built up a tolerance to wine and beer
its not uncommon for people to feel sick from red wine especially if its a cheaper brand it causes headaches and general crapola feeling because of the sulfates in it

Alcohol intolerance is a rare phenomenon that is characterized by the inability of a person to digest alcohol contents. This is caused due to the absence or deficiency of an enzyme called Aldehyde Dehydrogenase (ALDH) in our bodies (liver). When food is ingested, it is broken down with the help of enzymes so that it can be absorbed into the intestines or blood stream. However, alcohol is a toxic compound and it cannot be stored in the body. Thus it needs to be broken down into acetic acid (vinegar) and oxidized (with the help of the ALDH enzyme) in order to get rid of it. However, if there is a deficiency of this enzyme, then alcohol cannot be broken down, thus turning toxic for the body and therefore one will experience certain unpleasant reactions after alcohol consumption. There is also a possibility that some people have an alteration in the ALDH gene which is known as polymorphism. Polymorphism leads to the ALDH gene becoming inactive and therefore the breaking down of alcohol becomes impossible. This condition is genetic.

It is very possible for the meds to be doing this. Depression meds are the most overprescribed thing in the West today imo. I am NOT advocating messing with them without a pro's help. But ask yourself if your doctor is doing the right thing for you. Chances are she is, but then again chances are not tiny that it's something else. Shopping a competent psychiatrist is hard nowadays.
If you're on'em for sound reasons, saying bye to alcohol might be your best option. Depressives do like to overmedicate. been there done that.
But I'm suggesting there are no easy answers here, but yeah the meds could very credibly be running interference. They both modulate the simple chemicals your brain uses to signal the "feed fuck" happy part of the lizard brain. And you're trying to pump the happy (stimulate the reward mechanism that antidepressants by their nature level) when you seek the buzz. My 2¢

Zoloft and Wellbutrin both affect how you react to alcohol among other things. I'd cut way down on drinking while taking them.

For me to get shitty anymore, I really need shots or sips of hard liquor... and i drink it like a martini, just get use to the taste and try not to make faces so no one knows your bottle of water is straight vodka, typically when it gets to the point like this, you realize you have a problem, and need to switch up drugs for a while, and take a tolerance break. smoke more weed, drink less, or go drop some x at a nightclub and learn to have fun without alcohol... Then a couple weeks later you'll be able to get hammered on beer again. lol

Try to throw as many all sober days in your week as possible, and you'll quickly see how much more the various things effect you better after your sober days. :)

So basically it's a poison the body immediately tries to get rid of, and in the process raises blood pressure.

Which is a shame cuz' I really like Hennessy, but can only indulge once a week max.

Your liver must love you.
Lol. My liver is probably fucked. But when my blood pressure went all crazy stage 3 hypertension on me because of the Vyvanse I used to take, I had bloodwork done for my liver and everything was perfect... that was about a year ago. I was drinking more then than I am now. I really should cut back on the alcohol though... it's hard though when drinking and going out to the bar is the only thing people do anymore! haha

Im suffering from the exact same thing along with sexual dysfunction and emotional anhedonia since quitting SSRIs.
Are you in the same boat as me. I still cant feel anything from alcohol, I just miss so much of my life.
Just wondering if that feeling ever came back to you ? Are you still on SSRIs ? Did the emotional anhedonia and sexual dysfunction come to you as well?
