tesla installs what everyone knows is beta-stage self-driving software, literally calls it "Autopilot," and then publicly blames user error for every single accident without fail. i think we have to accept that there will be self-driving accidents, but they're literally out here exploiting this massive grey area between cruise control and self-driving to guinea pig their customers

its fucked

I don’t know, is Tesla really the problem here?

Maybe Covid has jaded me but I’ve come to the realization that 9 out of the 10 people I see in the course of a day are stupid motherfuckers.

As long as they only kill themselves, I’m all for the Darwinian cull of the herd.

if youre bored or curious enough, check these out:

tesla is not representative of the autonomous vehicle development space. they are an outlier, whose "we just dont give a fuck" attitude for the immense responsibility they are playing with pisses off AV developers as much as it does me (if not more).

this isn't about humans or automation it's about the interaction of of the two. behavioral psychology matters as much as hardware and software when designing these sort of systems, and automation has to serve the human, not the other way around.

two people dead, nobody in the driver seat. 6,000 lb experiments in half-baked, camera-only autonomy, capable of doing 0-60 in under 3 seconds, just roaming the streets.

very normal and very cool. i love the future
We already have driverless cars, they are occupied by people who text behind the wheel. Another Darwin award, death by stupidity is not a new thing, just the technology changes, people don't.

I think you had better give a few more the benefit of the doubt, unless you live in a trailer park or something... Rickey
Change that avatar to the Bubbles Rob Ford fusion, it's too good not to use!

Having the car tell them they are a fucking moron might help too! Valid concerns for sure, but in the end the machines will probably be better divers than most people. It will just take a few dead bodies to prove the concept and develop the technology. I sure as shit wouldn't use it or especially depend on it, but people will text, read the paper, have breakfast or take a nap in the back seat while on the way to work.

Solid sate battery technology will take care of most of the fire issues, though pure lithium is flammable all on it's own, but not so bad. Being an FPV pilot I know and have seen lithium battery fires and take appropriate measures when charging and dealing with them. Crash yer drone into a tree at 160 kph and the fire will be spectacular as the lipo is destroyed, so is the quad.

When cruise control first came out, people did the same thing: pressed the button and assumed the car would drive itself.

But yeah, Tesla is the only company that calls it "autopilot". Musk will defend it saying that EVENTUALLY it will be autonomous. (Yeah. Sure. Right. Not with that Mickey Mouse system he's using.)

Fact is when these accidents happen Musk and Tesla point to the documentation saying that it's a driver assist and the driver should keep their hands on the wheel. Then of course he goes on social media and posts and reposts videos of people reading a book, taking a nap, eating lunch, etc. in their Tesla while it's on autopilot.

Musk should be held directly responsible for this crap.

i have an idea: let's put the unlimited fire cars in a small narrow underground tunnel with no emergency exits. we don't need emergency exits where we're going (hell).
people asking about the loop "how do you get out of the tesla in an emergency when the tunnel is so narrow" without understanding that it's actually impossible to leave the backseat of a tesla in an emergency even on a regular road

i don't understand how this is legal or allowed or even tolerated by customers

R/realtesla if you're on reddit. They cover all that shit. It's pretty wild to even consider 'self driving' a thing. My phone bugs out like once a month or twice a month. And that's old tech. Well newer phone but same system since android came out basically.
Now imagine driving a phone 70mph and it bugs out. Bad shits gonna happen.

Another good one is r/selfdrivingcarslie I think it's called
