is a 400w hps too much for a 4x4 grow tent?

i bought a VIVOSUN 4x4 Grow Tent, 48"x48"x80". i was wondering if my 400w hps is good for this size tent. i was also looking into getting a HGL Scorpion Rspec 600w or the HGL blackbird 2022, are these any better?

400w HPS is better for a 3' x 3' tent. Just keep the light as close to the canopy as possible, during the flowering lighting period. Check that your hand doesn't get uncomfortably hot under the light, at the distance of the canopy height.i noticed according to the breeders description of a strain I'm growing; they recommend LED for the veg state and HPS for flowering. So, I wouldn't totally disregard their application.

I run a 600 watt HPS in a 4x4 tent. 400 is going to be underpowered. And HID will grow some serious fire in a 4x4. You need at least a 600 which will allow you to grow 3-4 plants. How those plants turn out depends on the grower but you can get the same quality with HID as you can with any LED. HID's use more electricity and put off more heat but they grow some damn good weed.

I notice 600 hps in a 4x4 hard to keep within optimal temps where i live, very nice buds but i think i loose terps due to 91 degree temps,
I had a 315 cfm fan pulling air at full speed so the filter didnt do so well, i had to upgrade to a 8x24 phresh to help with the smell. Very nice buds but everything got easier whith leds,
I think 600 in a 4x4 is bare minum amount of wattage,
You wouldnt want less than that in a 4x4.
I got a mars hydro fc4800 and think it blows the hps out of the

Yes it can be difficult to control Temps. That's why I shut down during the summer and grow plants outside for a run.

I'm running a 660w bar fixture, other light was bar type 600w either give full coverage to 4x4. Without the heat issues of hps. Was using 1k hps, heat was issue! Watts are watts. Saving 400w is a big issue. Any 3k or 4k with 660 deep reds will suffice. Or mix of spectrums good also. 600 watts will give you 37.5w per sq ft. Enough to flower well.

Even a 600w doesn't quite do the job for a 4x4 , grab another 400w or 600w to go with that 400w will be the shit

A 1000w HID has aways been the basic standard in a 4 x 4 area. Tis gives 62.5w/sq/ft. A 600w is meant for a 3 x 3 which is 66w sq/ft.m The main thin in a tent or even a large room is heat, and getting enough air flow. The better the fresh air exchange, the higher the temperatures can be tolerated. Fresh air exchange is one of the most inportant factors in ndoor gardenng. Be it HID or LED. Weed needs a ton of fresh air to reach its optimum genetic potential. Also the more air the more light they can tolerate. Many times when people get light bleaching is because of insufficient air flow. I can get a 1000w Hortilux HID as close as 15 inches when I can keep the temps at 85f -88f, as long as I have tremendous fresh air exchange. I get no light bleaching. I also start seedling under 1000w HID at 24 inches above seedlings. It gets 90f outside doesnt it?? Especially along the equator, or southeast Asia. Even Hawaii. I also keep fans slightly blowing on my plants, and make sure all of the leaves are getting a noticeable breeze, and they are all slightly moving.

Many people run 1000W in 5' tents. a 4ft is going to need some serious air exchange or sealed room with CO2

Alot of heat from HPS is radiant, meaning it builds up within the leaf tissue, can't prevent that by high air exchange.
The 600w in 4*4 has very light in the corners but still a heavy central spot, that is were the problems will surface
