Is a electronic ballast necessary?

I have a 400 watt HTG light that I got of ebay...it does the trick but I have seen that hortilux bulbs can vastly increase yield and I was wondering if I can stick that bulb into my current setup? or do I need a electronic ballast??

You don't have to have an electronic ballast, but a ballast is required for HPS and MH lighting.
