Leaf Hoppers

These bastards suck the liquid out of stems and now that my plants are blooming they get into the buds. I don't know how much damage they are doing, but it is concerning. Anyone been down this road? I'm in Oregon's Willamette Valley. Picture won't upload. I'll keep trying. Thanks, Ken

Spinosad can work, although it didn't do a damn thing for me this year. We've be having grasshoppers/leaf hoppers like the damn plague out here. They have some pellets you can put down that locals have said work really well.. I can't remember what they're called. I just used sevin about a month before they went into bloom. Took care of them for me. I wouldn't use sevin anywhere near flower though.
If I can remember what the pellets are called ill post back.
Good luck!

Also - grasshoppers will eat your plant. (Not sure about leaf hoppers) I had a buddy out here that had grasshoppers eat the stalk of his 7' plant and killed it.

Stopped in a local grow shop today and the young lady was very helpful. Here is what I learned, drum roll........................You don't want to smoke Leaf Hoppers. I am so thankful.

Anytime I've ever planted in an.area near ferns I've had issues with leaf hoppers. They don't seem to do much overall damage to big healthy plants, but ive seen em mess up struggling plants to the point of death.
As far as treating.them, they don't like Capsaicin. Easy to get out of hot peppers. I've also found clearing the area of small brush and weeds tends to reduce their numbers.

The biggest problem with leaf hoppers I find is that they pick an area and very quickly reproduce, leaving tons of them on one of your plants. I have had some unexplained brown spotting (looks similar to a calcium deficiency) and leaf yellowing on some of my more heavily infested plants. I can't be certain this is caused by hopper burn, but I would highly recommend dealing with the problem somehow before it gets too o far and damages your plant. Early on it looked like they were causing no damage, but as their numbers increased, so did my problems.

I got the Spinosad yesterday and sprayed last evening. There seem to be a lot fewer of them this afternoon, and hopefully less in the morning. The directions say not to use over 3 gallons per 1000sq ft. I used a gallon on my plants and it was barely enough using a fine mist. I'm curious what ramifications of using over three gallons are. It will either work or not before I use over 3 gallons.

IMG_1708.JPG IMG_1706.JPG I went out this morning to look for hoppers and the first one I put the sneak on to squish was dead. I found other dead ones too and very few living. It appears that it takes a couple days for the spinosad to work as they have to ingest it. I'm happy and thankful for the advise. Read the directions if you use this stuff. I applied it in a very fine mist and it took a gallon for my 10 plants.
