As far as growing weed, yeah that’s a problem you want total darkness during the plants dark period assuming you’re using photoperiod plants not autos
You can also check the timer with a continuity tester as well to see if their is still continuity when it is in the off position. Try this on a single pole light switch to see how it works but your tester has to be capable of testing continuity. This test is done with out any power being supplied to your timer or the single pole light switch so you can see how it works. I am a 40 year master electrician in the USA.
