Hey all,

Just a thought after watching so many grow videos of lolipoping and LST’ing...Has it been proven unsuccessful to have lights both on the ground focused towards the lower growth as well as a light hanging to focus on top canopy?

So imagine a tent where there’s one LED fixture on the ground angling towards the center and another on the right side as well as a light at the top. I would imagine this would eliminate the efforts of lollipopping and low stress training no?

Leaves don’t photosynthesis from the bottom. Side lighting will help, but under canopy you’re just wasting power.
ahhh ok so there is some science behind it after all good to know! IDT I’ve ever heard that explained once

Yes, the underside of leaves can photosynthesise.
Technically leaves are vertically asymmetrical in terms of their biology due to the stomata (exchanges gas like carbon dioxide and oxygen) on the underside of the leaf.

However, the chloroplasts that allow for photosynthesis are held in the ‘middle’ of the leaf between the upper and lower epidermis (a ‘shell’ to help control transpiration aka release of water into the air).

While I couldn't tell you for sure if a mirror would help, I can say with some confidence that it likely wouldn't.

Here's my reasoning:

Evolution wise, a leaf that does not utilise all available chlorophyll in a leaf is suboptimal, and trees don't like sub optimal.

Leaves are slightly translucent, meaning the light will pass through the entire leaf and interact with all chloro

Any commercial facilities you know using under canopy lighting?

weird right? You’d think if anything you just typed ( which I’m not reading because you’re too lazy to translate) were true to increase yields, everyonewould have under canopy lighting by now?

Underlighting does work (on mother plants at least). When I did it (with a mother), the cloning stock buried down there definitely improved with underlighting. Never tired it with flowering plants.

At a certain point you've maxed out how much light the plant can use. Lights under a plant also creates headaches - got to be careful not to get water on the lights, makes foliar feeding more difficult/impossible, you don't want any electricity exposed to water, etc. You could run into PM issues because the plant gets to full/bushy and you don't have enough air flow under there. Also how are you going to support heavy branches under there that don't make it to the canopy/trellis? Heat is going to come off the lights and rise straight into the plant.

Something else to consider is the LED bar style lamps get really good penetration already because in essence you have ~3000 separate light sources hitting the plant from all different angles.

Go ahead and give it a shot and report back. My initial thoughts are it'll be just as big a PITA as LST, Lollipopping, etc. Obviously yield per plant would increase, however, I'd bet yield per watt would decrease significantly. Maybe if you had really limited space or limited plant count and you didn't care about yield/watt, then this is an idea worth pursuing. I'm sure it's been tried numerous times over the years and since it's not a common practice, it's probably not a worthwhile endeavor.

The plant redirects the energy. When weed is lolloped it does send more energy to the tops since there are no bud sites on the stalk below the canopy. No larf, & more yield.

On my first grow I did not lollipop, but did super cropping. LST.
I did super cropping. LST & lollipop the next grow &
it helped get more max yield. I do not have side lighting.

When you use a High-Intensity LED and side lighting
from the scrog screen up to canopy top & not below
the scrog screen. Along with Super Cropping, LST &
Lolloping is another technique to help get maximum
yield for most strains grown indoors.

Check out @bk78 grow journal, if you have not yet he is killing it!
Like he also pointed out that this is also what Commercial grows do indoors.

This is from the Grove in Las Vegas &
they use FOSHE A3i fixtures"

"Early in Flower: Super Crop & Light thinning.
After 3 weeks, Mid Flower Lollipop & Strong thinning".


Outdoors it is good to thin to help keep air flow moving
through the plant dry faster after it rains & help keep
mold etc. from developing.

Just my POV.

A ganja leaf (and most other leafs) have a different design purpose top and bottom there not mirror like they do different jobs.

The underside of the leaf has a different role it doesn't have the ability to use/gather light, the light gathering chloro?
are in the surface layer.
