Mystery Plant - Grow Journal (1st Indoor Grow)

SUPER SUBLIMINAL'S FIRST INDOOR GROW

Hey! I have been enjoying this forum so much and have been so excited about my new found hobby I thought I'd start a public grow journal.

A little about myself. I used to grow very successfully outdoors as a teenager with a family member but that was something like 15 years ago. He started off teaching me but eventually I read and learned so much I was teaching him. Having said that growing weed outdoors is the easiest thing in the world. But that all ended at some point due to lack of space.

I had been vaguely thinking for years that I wanted to start growing indoors but knew nothing about it and was too scared to take the leap. Now the street prices have gone up so much it seemed like the only option. I mentioned this to him and he completely surprised me by giving me this mystery plant that he'd germinated from bagseed. He'd just recently taken the leap into indoor growing himself. The plant was already pretty big and I didn't have a light so for a few days it was just sitting in the window making me smile. This had all just fallen into my lap...

I spent the next three days reading and watching any tutorial I could find and quickly realised that all my knowledge of outdoor growing wasn't going to help me much indoors and that really I'm a complete beginner to this. When we grew outdoors we grew amazing plants 10 foot tall but we never used nutrients or Ph tested anything. I re-potted the plant only to discover that it was potbound; there was only massive, flat, disk of root at the bottom of the pot which freaked me out at first glance. It should have been repotted weeks ago. Then I went out and got a 125w CFL and converted a cupboard in my flat. After a few days the plant started to show its preflowers and I was sure it was a female so I got a red bulb and started a 12/12 cycle. She's been in flower for three days now and is really stretching out. She is very lanky on top - either from being potbound for too long, or from her time in the window - but appears healthy to me. What do you think?

Feedback, tips and advice are much appreciated.

If anyone wants to have a stab at guessing the strain I'd be very interested to hear. All I know is that he said it was a "nice smoke".

I'm growing her under one 125w CFL bulb. She has not had any nutes yet. I have got some biobizz grow and bloom now which I'm very excited to feed her. Hopefully the soil will be dry enough today or tomorrow.

If I could get an Oz out of this mystery plant I would be over the moon. That'd save me well over £200 in street prices, and I smoke that in a month.... Anyone think that's remotely possible?

A short update. She is filling out a lot now and the more I read other people's journals the more I realise how scraggly she is. I wonder what conditions my friend was keeping her in. We have not been in contact now so I haven't been able to ask him. He said he got the seeds mid-March and I assume he germinated them straight away, which means the plant must have been in the vegetative phase for at least a month and a half. She should be a lot bigger. Still she looks very healthy, and has lots of new growth spots coming up all over.

Responded well to first does of nutrients. Also I've started putting the blue CFL on for a few hours in the middle of each day hoping to give her a little extra boost...

On my first grow right now so i can't tell you much but first i'd put her in a bigger pot. More light hitting all those lower leaves wouldn't be bad either. Keep those cfls close as possible without burning them.

After getting feedback from several forum members about the size of my pot I rush out and get a bigger one and end up coming back with a bag of All Mix as well. I transplant her very successfully and there are no problems. I then decide I must have more lights. NOW! I go back down to the shop and buy a fucking massive 250W CFL. It doesn't fit inside the metal reflector hood but I force it in, bringing the temperature around the light up to 100oF. Brilliant! I set up some some really impractical 16" desk fans which helps the problem. I then get back on my computer and start reading more about CFLs only to discover - almost instantly - it's way more efficient to get lots of little ones at lower wattage. Why didn't I read this before? I've only spent over 100 hours already learning and researching every aspect of gardening, but I missed this (if you're interested in buying the light message me). Oh well, must go on. At least now she has 500W (actual) on her. She's still a weedy looking thing but she's healthy (I think - looking a bit wilty in photos only because she's just fed).

Looking at the amount she's grown since last week it seems obvious to me know that she had been restricted for too long by small pots. Learning a lot throughout this.

:leaf: :leaf: :leaf:

It's been a week at 12/12 now and today I discovered another problem. Light leaks! I got in the closet and closed the doors, and, I have no idea how I overlooked this before but, there is an ever-so faint crack of light from around the door-frame. I'm sure I checked it before, maybe it was darker when I did. It's the faintest faintest glow and it's only been a week so I hope it's okay. I'm going to throw a sheet over the outside of the closet tonight until I get something to make a curtain with for the inside.

:leaf: :leaf: :leaf:

Still can't get a decent photo. My camera is broken and my galaxy s3 takes nice photos in the sun but we haven't had any here for weeks...

This is her favourite symphony. I play it most mornings as she wakes :

Yes! Today was a great day because I got 100% confirmation that my plant is female and I can even prove it with a semi decent photo! Plus the Turkish shop had some freshly delivered Cheese to celebrate!

In two months time I will have my own little jar of homegrown sensi and I will have learnt much in the process!

Congrats on your all-girl party.

I use fem seeds, but I have one bag seed in this grow that will require the same "wait and see" process.

Nothing like smoking your own bud.

Another 8 days gone. Day 17 of 12/12 now and her two tops are continuing to stretch out like crazy. Quite happy I didn't follow more experienced growers advice and re-veg her because she's almost too big for the closet now. Proximity and positioning of the lights is becoming a daily battle with some leaves getting burnt. I've had to reduce power from 500W to 375W because I just can't find room for those big bulbs.

20130602_094713.jpg

She growing so much at night that I have to raise the lights one inch each morning. Soon there won't be much room left but I think she's near the end of the stretch.

:leaf: :leaf: :leaf:

The stems on those two tops are also jetting out like crazy making lots of little tops.

Canopy is looking quite good now and loads of white pistils are popping up.

:leaf: :leaf: :leaf:

I tied some branches up and, as an experiment, supercropped some of the branches on the opposite side to compare bud production.

Maybe I've done this too late in her life to really take advantage of the technique but like I said it's more of a learning thing.

Playing her Miles Davis this week. I imagine she gets some kind of mad growth kick out of this :joint:

Day 24 of 12/12

This last week the plant has been giving me a lot of concern, and I've had to post quite a few annoying questions. Sorry RIU. One or two users have been really helpful and one or two have been real pricks. First there was a rust type look on the tips of the leaves on one of the tops, then dying/browning pistils after only two weeks, and then leaf curling. I think we've worked out that it's too much heat but I'm still monitoring it...

20130609_191129.jpg

At one point it seemed really bad but the good news is those pistils appear like they're being renewed

It takes time to see the plant react to adjustments. But if she's putting out new pistils in the damaged area, maybe you are on the road to recovery? I had heat stresses and drainage issues a couple weeks ago. Today you couldn't tell there was ever a problem. Nice to see all the bud sites and you're right, probably need to keep tying her down so the lights stay close. Good job SS.

Thanks Prosperian.

Day 25
Here's some pics of how I tied her down to get her away from the light. She was up to my shoulders before. Think I did okay. Never done anything like LST before. She adjusted all her leaves and picked her heads up like that within a few hours.

Some pics I took with a 40X loupe that I bought on ebay for £2.50. I can't see any trichomes yet

hey good job mate , I think you'll get your ounce ;-) on the tying down, they turn back pretty quick hey, so you got 8-9 weeks to go? enjoy the ride.

she looks sativa and it feels to me she will be giving you some yummy bud to jar up and smoke :bigjoint:
I was thinking that for a long while too but the shade leaves are so wide I've now come to think it's a cross. Only other feedback I've had is from RIKNSTEIN who thought it was indica. Either way I'm getting very hungry.

Day 27
The orange rust spots started to come back yesterday. Whatever it is it doesn't seem to be spreading too badly but it is still quite concerning. I've looked at pictures of deficiencies and abundances, heat stress and pests, until my eyes hurt. I think I even started to hallucinate bugs on my plant at one point, and last night I had the most terrible nightmare about Spider Mites. So until I work out what it is I'm just making subtle changes.

20130612_132339.jpg

The temperatures gone down to about 76 and the plant is almost a foot from the light so I don't think it's heat. I skipped out on the nutes for two feeds and still it came back so I don't think it's an overdose.

:dunce: :dunce: :dunce:

Found out the reason family member hasn't been in touch - he's in prison awaiting trial - - so I really wanna do a good job with this, as I assume all his plants are dead by now.
