Regular seeds, percentage of being female.

I recently bought 20 regular seeds for the price of $3.00 each. Though this is not the first time with regular seeds planted and I know how to detect the males from female in early stage of life. This is first time with seeds bought from a breeder, in the old days my seeds came from bags I bought or from friends so I did not know what strain or sex I was growing.

Any way, I'm thinking that regular seeds from a breeder (supplier) is usually 50/50% male and female.

Is my assumption correct?

I only want to get a couple plants so I won't be planting all 20 seeds.

Thanks and light it up.

Gary,
I've read that statistically there are more males. But my personal experience is different. A few months ago I planted 11 seeds and got 4 males. There are techniques...some as simple as stress avoidance...to encourage female plants. A seed isn't locked in to a gender untill it germinates...

John, thanks for the feedback. Interesting thought about stress avoidance. Since I've got a good price for the seeds I think I'll play a little and place a few seeds in soil and let nature take over. Perhaps that will alleviate some of the stress factor. I've never seeded that way and it could be interesting. I'll keep you posted in a few weeks.

Cannabis, unusually, is dioecious and uses the XY sex determination system. Sex is set at fertilization. Male:Female ratio of regs is 50-50.

Here's a paper from a team that did a karyotype on Cannabis a few years ago, there are others. https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0085118
Thanks for the reading material, only problem is that I'm a simple man and some big words really mess me up. Having said that, I'll take your word on the 50% ratio and assuming I get 50% females I'm still ahead monetarily by having only $8 per plant invested.
