Screw this, I'm going in all guns blazing

Morning all,

I acquired a couple of shitty little 70 watt propagation lights, I dont know how old they are but I think they are shit.
My girls have been in soil 3 days and I can just about see them popping through, I have 2 strains. 5 super Lemon haze and 1 amnesia. The amnesia is well on her way, but is beginning to stretch, its the 5 SLH that are very shy.
So, in my impatience, I've fired up the big dog, my 600watt dual spectrum HPS.
Fuck its bright, will this hurt my girls?
Oh, I got made redundant from my job a couple of weeks back, so I cant splash out on any gear, I want to but I cant.

This is my first ever grow, so if I sound like a dick, I apologise, just give me the benefit of the doubt.

Thanks.

Peace.

a lot of light right off isn't important , even when you move a well veeged plant from under say a t5 to HID you gotta keep the light real high till the plant gets used to the high intensity.

I dunno that the slh was a good choice for a first grow but you're probably doing soil so it may not be as picky.

Yeah, I agree dbkick, the SLH is seems harder to grow than the amnesia. Thanks for the advice.....

Thanks Xcon,

I just measured the distance and the HPS is exactly 37 inches away from my girls, Im not the sharpest knife in the draw, but I think that is ok, am I right?

Peace.

I just love that chart.
My experience with clones just starting to root is a 400 watt CMH. Kept it 48" out for a whole week with the new roots, just to be sure. Seemed to work, they did not stretch during that time.
Difficult for me to describe when to move the light closer, I've grown the same clone 3 years now and have a feel for it. Two sets of paired leaves for the sativa I grow gets a closer light, unless the nodes are too close together, then I wait some more.

All strains most definitely are not created equal.

But using the chart, I clone at 20%, veg starts at 40% increasing to 60%. The same lights, distance changes only.
The budroom runs at 80% because that is all the 400 watters I can fit and still have the light overlap on the plants.

I doubt you would have any burning with them that far away, but I think you could get them a little closer to the light than that. I made the mistake of letting mine break ground under my 400w HPS... which was only about 12-14" above them. They have bounced back for the most part, but I wasted time worrying about soil issues and allowed them to bake for a couple of days. Just watch for leaf curling and spotting. The plant will feel and look very dry.

My next batch will sprout under some CFLs, but the HPS is doable.

Here is one of mine that I burned. This one is now eleven days old. The light is about 16" away at this point, and they are beginning to stretch a little, but they stayed very short to begin with. You can see the damage on the single leaves, and the three blade leaves are a little deformed, but the new growth is healthier.

Thanks for the posts and advice everybody.....

I dont like that super lemon haze, I've got 2 that I think wont make it, one hasn't even shown itself and the other is wilted into the soil, the other 3 SLH are standing up but still trying to break out of their shell.

The 1 amnesia I've got is flying. I wish I had more experience....:(

Peace
