Sterile vs bennies in warmer temps

Do you use the same mix as Thundercat? Here is the mix he posted:
"I mixed a 1/2 tsp of shock granules into 1 gallon of water to make a solution. Then add 1ounce of that solution per gallon in the res about every 3-4 days."
1/2 tsp is 2.13 grams
no, i dosed my res directly with just the powder. once or twice a week. my target was 3 ppm of free chlorine ( 1 to 5 is safe for humans and plants) which equated to 0.30 grams per 10 gallons.

Got it. I found the plain old Shock. 1.5lbs for $21.97 on Amazon. That's a lifetime supply for me. Thank you.
But the bottle might not. The guy who sold me my 2kg pool shock told me it will start to crack in a couple years cause of the concentration. Seems like a decent sturdy plastic bottle but I guess the guy know what he is talking about. But yeah it will last you a looong time!

I believe bleach and poolshock are the same thing except pool shock is a stronger concentration. Correct me if I'm wrong though. Why do people use poolshock over bleach? cheaper? I would think a bottle of bleach would last a really long time too.

Bleach is sodium hypochlorite and pool shock is calcium hypochlorite. U want calcium hypochlorite.

So I think this is wrong? The only difference is one will give you a little more sodium and the other calcium. But, your adding it in such small doses I don't think it would matter...I may be wrong though.

I'm having trouble finding anything not pool related.

I use .1g per 10 gallon and I have not had issues. Glad to know somebody uses more so I don't get as much anxiety when I add more by accident.

so from my understanding.... out of all these options.... pool shock, h2o2, bennies etc.

They all do a similar good job of preventing root rot.

Only difference is h2o2 and pool shock are the cheapest but you have to reload them often back into your rez... every ~2-3 days.

Bennies last a bit longer but theyre more expensive unless you buy GFF which is cheap like sterile but you dont have to add it as often to your rez like h2o2 and calcium hypochlorite. once a week should do?

did I sum up the sterile vs bennies debate pretty accurately here?

very well done. as someone who has done both shock and GFF, each way works great. i think one thing to add is with shock, you need a scale accurate to 0.01 grams. overdose potential is greatest with shock, peroxide isn't too far behind and GFF is pretty much non-existent

Rky, did you ever have a problem with your free chlorine reacting with the nitrogen component in your nutes? It seemed like when I would use shock with my GH three part, the chlorine would react with the nitrogen to create chloramine and I would be left with no free chlorine.

Like most hydro growers I started with beneficials and all of the expensive add-ins. I spent years adding and adjusting the system trying to 100% prevent root rot or blooms in the reservoir. No matter how hard I tried or how much work I put in, shit still happened.

Since I switched to HTH shock treatments 4 years ago I haven't had a single issue. The winter to summer change doesn't worry me any more, I've had my lung room AC fail and the water get to nearly 80F and still didn't have a problem. I've been preaching the benefits of a sterile reservoir ever since. (And I'm still using the original bag I bought on Amazon for $10.)

How do u make sure u don't use too much over time(buildup)? I have 2kg hth pool shock but no equipment to read levels.

I have yet to see any ill effects from dosing the shock (and I don't even measure it any more). I just pop open my jug of concentrate, drop a splash in, and move on. There is no risk of build-up with pool shock since calcium hypochlorite breaks down into oxygen and chlorine, and the chlorine dissipates in a few days. (This is why you don't use bleach, since sodium will build-up over time.)

This is exactly my experience too. After the first few months I stopped measuring anything because it didn’t seem to matter. We are talking about very small amounts here.

When I mixed up my shock into solution I just scooped roughly the right amount and dissolved it. Then I used that solution liberally.

Here is an old post on mixing a stock solution with pool shock
